These values are contingent upon 13 starters in the New Castle, middle event of the "Distaff Big Three," and seven starters in the Dover. In the wide-open New Castle, the Calumet Farm tandem of Amoret and Princess Turia could conceivably parade postward in the role of favorite, though their position is by no means secure. Arrayed against them are: Ellis Farms Little Pache; Christopher T. Chenerys Manotick; Reginald N. Websters Sorceress; George D. Wideners Rare Treat; Hal Price Headleys Attica, Ellwood B. Johnstons Kings Mistake, Mrs. J. R. H. Thourons White Orchid, Howell E. Jacksons Nasrina, Max Zipkins Gay Warbler, Mrs. J. M. Branhams Tour-nure and D and H Stables Jane Gess. Hartack to Ride Calumet Runner To explain the rather unique conditions of the "Distaff Big Three" and the New Castle would require more space than has been allotted to this column, but suffice to say that, should Sorceress, Rarand Treat, Gay Warbler or the representatives of Mrs. Gene Markey emerge victorious, they would net 8,150, while the net value would be 8,187.50 should any of the older fillies and mares prove successful. If the race is won by Jane Gess, lone three-year-old in the field, the net value to the winner would be 8,200. William Hartack will put in an appearance from Chicago to handle either Amoret or Princess Turia, having been named as the rider of both lassies. Consensus of opinion is that he will be astride Amoret, the Bull Lea— Mar-Kell five-year-old with whom he won the Columbiana and Black Helen handicps amialeah during the past winter. In a conditioning race here 10 days ago, she closed impressively to be second behind "The Princess" after six furlongs in 1:10%, which equaled the fastest time of the meeting. Princess Turia was scoring her second win in four starts but it is believed that the increased distance will favor Amoret. Likely to vie with the Calumet team for favoritism is Little Pache, who boasts victories in the Correction and Bed o Roses handicaps among her 1957 accomplishments. She sent her seasonal earnings to 4,650 through her recent second to Floral Park in the Bellerose Handicap. The Apache— Little Spooky four-year-old will be ridden by Conn McCreary. The only other 1957 stakes winner in the New Castle field is Kings Mistake, a seven-year-old invader from California. This veteran took the Santa Maria Handicap at Continued on Page Fifty-One Thirteen to Do Battle In New Castle Stakes Calumets Princess Turia and Amoret May Rule Choice Today Continued from Page Fifty-Six Santa Anita during the winter and arrived here following a long, but uneventful, plane trip from the West Coast. She will be handled* by Rogelio Trejos. Rare Treat is without a stakes success this season during a light campaign but last year won the Philadelphia Turf and Vineland handicaps to amass 7,100 in earnings. Sorceress and Manotick have good efforts in stakes competition, while Nasrina will endeavor to regain the form she displayed as a two-year-old in 1955, when she was voted championship honors of her division. Attica will be attempting to stretch to three her current victory skein and shapes up as the most improved member of the field. In her last score she beat, among others, Next Day and Levee. White Orchid. Tournure and Jane Gess appear rather ambitiously placed, especially the last-named, a three-year-old. * I The Dover, which would be worthy of top billing on almost any card, attracted seven youngsters, four of whom have already distinguished themselves with stakes victories. The winner of this test, final two-year-old stakes of the meeting, will net 0,225. Making up the Dover field are Elkcam. Stables Hubcap, winner of the Florida Breeders and Christiana; Selena Kirks-dats Bolero TJ., victor in the Gulfstream Juvenile and Jamaicas Youthful; Mrs. Irving Gushens Bumpy Road, who took the Lafayette at Keeneland; W. Taylor Leatherburys Eastern Hobo, the Bowie Breeders winner; Montpeliers Nala, a full brother to the record-breaking Nahodah; Bohemia Stables Ambitwixt, and Mrs. S. H. Sadaccas A Dragon Killer.
