Walnut Hills Purse Gets Top River Downs Billing History Book, Tyus Among Eleven In Six-Furlong Allowance Event By W. A. CKUSE RIVER DOWNS, Cincinnati, Ohio, June 21.— The ,000 added Verdant Handicap, the first of the stakes events to be staged on River Downs 50,000 turf course, was called off here today when but five of the original 12 nominations passed through the entry box. It is the third of the six advertised stakes in the River Downs stakes publication, and it will be interesting to not the effect this might have on the events lined up for the future. Instead of the Verdant, racing secretary and handicapper James P. Ross Jr. has arranged an allowance test for three-year-olds and older at six furlongs entitled the Walnut Hills. The purse for this affair is ,800 and including a coupling there .are 11 drawn on the overnight to face starter Bill Simpson. Comprising the field are Hamon and Christmans Victory* Blood, S. I. Crews Commargo, L. T. Schavels Joe Ji, T. H. B. Frelinghuysens History Book, T. I. Har-kins Spanish Trail, Broome Barbours Good and Bad, W. C. Morris* Midway Rambler, J. J. Gavin Jr.s Tyus, C. H. History Book is somewhat of a hard luck campaigner at at this meeting. In his first try, the seven-year-old altered son of Reading II. — Paulas Nymph was actually in front at the wire but was disqualified for interfering with Roysie R. through the stretch. That was his fifth start of the year and his first in a little over two months of idleness while shipping here from Gulfstream Park in Florida. He followed that outing with by another bang-up second, this time to H. P. Pierattis Larrikin in the Cincinnati Lions Purse last Wednesday. In that affair jockey Billy Phelps sent the Bernborough gelding six furlongs in 1:09% to turn in the best time at the meeting for the distance. History Book w_as but a length and one-quarter off the winner. Jockey Gilbert Roser replaced apprentice N. Johnson who rode him in his initial endeavor at the session, and for tomorrow jockey W. D. Lucas will have the chore. Roser to Ride Tyus Tyus will have the services of Roser in this event and is another to be strongly considered for the major portion of the spoils. Though a three-year-old against older horses this Miche — Sis Tartan gelding has accomplished everything-asked of him. In his short stakes career which includes two outings at Churchill Downs and two at River Downs, he has won two and earned • two seconds. In his winning effort, he galloped to the wire two lengths in advance of S. I. Crews Commo-Lady and jockey Gilbert Roser under jockey j Jesse Parsons guidance. His second was to the fleet-footed Lady Bolero from the J. Rigney establishment which won the only! three starts of her career right here at the j Downs. I The Verdant Purse, now the secondary attraction, appears to be a wide-open contest. Previous winners which are aiming at the big end of the purse include Judy Rounders, who runs in the interest of Hodge and Hawkins; John Bronnenbergs Joellen, J. L. Howards Unrestricted, P. L. Rices Pine Shadow and the Ben-Jo Stables Son Joss, a two-time visitor to the charmed circle at this meeting. Eden Smiths Pheidippides will be making a debut, but has won three races this season while campaigning at Sunshine Park at Oldsmar, Florida, and Waterford Park at Chester, West Virginia. J. E. Thomas sends out Tiger Toi, a two-time victor at the Downs, and Brook Prince, racing for Benedetto and Guarino, will be trying for his fourth win of the year in his initial outing here at the Downs tomorrow. Completing the field are T. A. H. Smiths Baby Lex, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Maixwells highly consistent Diabolo and the Raveii-wood. Stables Eternal Nell, the latter the unknown quantity.
