Sally Lee Proves Best At Hollywood in Nursery Coyert Ranch Filly Shows Way to Cymbidium and Stumbling Block HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif., June 21.— The Covert Ranchs Sally Lee scored her third victory in four tries when she raced home first in the 4,650 Nursery Stakes for two-year-old fillies here Thursday afternoon. The chestnut daughter of Anyoltime and Pusilla, guided by Pete. Moreno, ran the five and one-half furlongs of her engagement in the i-espectable time of 1:04 and reached the wire a little more than two lengths ahead of Cymbidium with Stumbling Block finishing third; The race was lor juvenile fillies who had never won a sweepstakes and it attracted a field, of 12, Nushie beating the others. As one of the outsiders in the wagering Sally Lee paid 7.60 for and her net share of the purse was 5,300. Cymbidium, the favorite, and Stumbling Block dominated the running of the Nursery over the early furlongs, but Sally Lee was not far behind them in third place to the head of the homestretch. There the Covert filly passed Stumbling Block and then took after the pacemaker. A furlong from the wire Cymbidium still was two lengths in the lead and it looked like she might last, but a little farther along Sally Lee uncorked a burst of speed thatlanded her under the wire with plenty to spare. Though unable to withstand the winner, Cymbidium had no trouble beating Stumbling Block for the place. They were separated at the end by three lengths. Nushie, second choice, was a half length farther away after racing in the middle of the field to the final quarter. In order behind Nushie came Royal Nurse, Ferity, Peachywillow, Bessie Queen, Sister Damian, Blue Crest, Rhodas Brook and Regradi. Sally Lee was so lightly regarded when she began her racing career at Bay Meadows in April that she made her first appearance in a claiming race. She won it by four lengths and then several weeks later came through with another victory, but this time in a race under allowance conditions. Her third start was made here in the Junior League Stakes, won* by Glorious Nymph, and she finished fifth. Then came her smart triumph in Thursdays feature. Next awaiting her is the Hollywood Lassie on July 5.
