. — , mxzm Arlington Park I By J. J. Murphy Robert J. Martin Husky, Competent Jockey Has Ridden Many Eastern Stakes Winners Gaye Hartack Battle at Garden State Park ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 21. — With the Primer Stakes coming up for decision on Wednesday, it is interesting to note that a jockey who who rode rode the the winner winner of of that that . — , who who rode rode the the winner winner of of that that event seven* years ago iz on the grounds. His name is Robert J. Martin. He is 29 years old and hails from Baltimore. His winning ride of Rough n Tumble in the Primer marked one of the few times he has appeared on the Chicago circuit, although" he estimates he has ridden about 800 winners in his career, that goes back more than a dozen years. Martin, Martin, a a husky husky young young man man who who Martin, Martin, a a husky husky young young man man who who mxzm rides at about 112 pounds, is far better known on eastern courses than in the Midwest. Just recently he finished second to Willie Hartack for the riding honors at Garden State Park, s and Eddie Litzenberger, his agent, states, "We would have won it sure but for the , fact that Bob broke his hand with four days of racing still to go." The final score was: Hartack 20, Martin 17. Space does not permit us to elaborate on Martins accomplishments. Suffice to state that during the laCe forties he rode many stakes winners on Maryland and New Jersey tracks. However, the records do not show him taking any added money features since 1950 until this year, so that fact that he has steered several in Florida this season makes 1957 sort of a comeback trail for him. Martin was at one time with the division of the King Ranch stable, trained by Buddy Hirsch, and his engagements were once made by Chick iang, who is at present Hartacks agent. He has had but few mounts here. His first was on Craigwood, who was beaten in the last stride in track record, time, and he later won with Intencion and Bold Man. Martin, if he obtains some capable mounts, may be a "boy to watch" at this session. Recall Litzenbergers Accomplishments And Eddie Litzenberger, who is ever ready to boost the stock of Martin, was not such- a bad rider himself. He was at his best a little over 20 years ago when he wpn the first Widener Handicap ever run. That was in 1936 and the tace that has since mushroomed to 00,000 in value was worth one-tenth that amount to the winner. It was that same year that Litzenberger heat Granville in the Wood Memorial with Teufel, and won the Hopeful, the Sanford and the Grand Union Hotel Stakes with Maedic, and also took the Spinaway. The previous year, 1935, he won the Belmont Juvenile, the Ladies Handicap and the Swift, all in New York. Incidentally, Eddies brother Herb won the second Primer ever run when he beat the highly regarded Occupation with Littletown. And while on the subject of the Primer, we understand that former jockey Robert L. Vedder, who took the first running of, that stake with Alsab back in 1941 and also won the Washington Park Futurity, the Hyde Park, and other stakes with that fine colt as a two-year-old, will apply for a trainers license at the Illinois Racing Board meeting tomorrow morning. Vedder has been a licensed -exercise boy in Illinois since. 1949 and may be seen galloping horses each morning . . . Also coming up at the Saturday morning session of the board will be the matter of Charlie Burr, who was suspended late in the Balmoral session and his case referred to the board by the Balmoral stewards, with the recommendation that it remain in effect for the entire Chicago season. Adams Has New Castle Mount * Jockey Johnny Adams will leave for Delaware Park tonight to have the mount on Calumet Farms Amoret in the New Castle Stakes. Another jockey missing Saturday will be Haymond Camp, who is going to ThistleDown to ride Federal Judge in the Ohio Derby . . . Jockey Jess Higley got in from New York and will do the riding of the horses trained by Charlie Sanborn. One of the runners is Jovial Jove, who recently finished second in the Toboggan at Belmont Park . . . Willis T. Freeman has taken over the training of the horses owned by A. T. Verlick . . . Milton Resse-guet for years one of the most prominent trainers on this circuit in from New Orleans for a visit. Has a prosperous business in the Crescent City. The prominent Kentucky turfman and breeder Les- . lie Combs n., is an arrival from Lexington for a weekend of sport . . . Edwin D. Axton, another noted thoroughbred breeder, is in from Louisville . . . Chuck Miller is distributing stake books for the Hawthorne meeting .-..CD.
