Twelve Twelve Certain Certain to to Start Start in in Derby; Derby; Master Master Bid Bid Repeats Repeats at at Sportsmans Sportsmans Routs Opposition In Decisive Style Grissom Campaigner Leads Richavoo by Four Lengths As Rose Bed Finishes Third SPORTSMANS PARK, Cicero, 111.. May 4. — Perne L. Grissoms Master Bid, a gelding who showed one of the most impressive performances of the meeting in his seasonal bow, came right back with another rousing effort when he authoritatively downed his opposition in the Speed Purse here this afternoon. With Hank Manifold driving him to the front in the first sixteenth, the six-year-old son of Psychic Bid — Light Brocade was eased along the remainder of the distance and at the finish he was under double wraps while enjoying a comfortable four-length lead. William H. Bishops Richavoo, who had finished close up in two other starts at the meeting, once again gave an honest effort to finish second. M. H. VanBergs Rose Bed, the favorite, acted up a bit in the gate, was bothered after the break and went wide on the first turn. In spite of these mishaps she managed to finish third with a good test, although it was obvious that Master Bid was the best horse as the race was run. Master Bids time for the five furlongs was 1:0215, the fastest of the meeting, and the dasli was all the more impressive in view of his 120-pound impost. Over 10,000 in Attendance Mid-summer weather was in evidence throughout the afternoon with the thermometer on the ascendancy and heavy clothing being shed while comforting handkerchiefs were being brought into play. The stands were comfortably filled with 10,906 patrons. The start of the Speed was excellent, but when Little Bobbles veered to the outside from his No. 3 post position, he caused a jam that affected all but Master Bud and Pad Lock, who broke from Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. These two went into the first turn closely aligned, but Master Bid was striding nicely and Pad Lock was under a strong drive. Once they swung into the backstretch Master Bid began to draw clear under snugging tactics and it was evident that the race was over. All others were feeling the sting of the whip at this time. Master Bid rounded into the stretch several lengths in the van and it was there that Manifold looked back and found his opposition well beaten, and began to ease Continued on Page Three I , , Master Bid Scores Again At Sportsmans Course Reaches Wire With Four-Length Margin Over Richavoo in Dash Continued from Page One him. At the line. Master Bid was pulled up almost to a walk. The fifth was a wide-open wagering race, with Play Eda finally being backed into slight choice. This selection proved wise, for the Chance Play filly, the second winner of the afternoon to be sired by that stallion, raced her opposition into the ground and thei drew clear to win easily by five lengths. The result possibly could have been different had it not been for Willis E. bearing out badly after gaining a good lead on the first turn. Young Geordie was forced out with him and that eventually eliminated both from contention. Tony Skoronski received much better response from Cake Walk than he did when the filly made her first start of the meeting to capture the opener. The daughter of Chance Play, who had previously finished fourth, beaten some eight lengths, came through with a two-length victory against the cheap platers that competed at seven furlongs. The Chicago reinsman had her ■ in a contending position throughout and. once given the word, she drew away in the i stretch. Going into the race Skoronski was i tied with Harold Red Keene for the i jockey leadership. Skoronski added to his advantage in the ; third when he guided Harold W. Ostles 5 speedy Genies Mate to a three-quarters of a length score in the the third. Backed into » even money favoritism as the result of his ; previous good race over this track, Genies ; Mate was hard put to satisfy his legion of [ backers. He dogged in Seamans Pals steps ; for most of the journey and didnt get to the front until half way down the stretch. . Honor of winning by the widest margin l of the meetins, went to Mrs. S. Gorbets 3 Sweet Irene, who smothered her opposition to the extent of 12 lengths. The filly had I been beaten previously over this strip at - five furlongs, but found the added distance much more to her liking. She stepped to the front shortly after the start, and drew away with every stride. Overlooked in the ! wagering she returned 7.60 and completed ■ a Daily Double with Cake Walk, . winner of the first test, of 6.20.
