Collins, Detroit thoroughbred owner, and Mrs. Collins arrived from the Motor City and they will remain for the Diamond Jubilee Kentucky Derby running. The Collins horses presently quartered at the local oval, are conditioned by the veteran turfman, Jim Neil. Sam E. Wilson, Jr., whose horses are here in charge of Trainer Thomas Patrick Fleming, arrived from his Corpus Christi, Texas home. Mrs. Wilson and daughter, Mimi, also made the trip here and they will remain for the Kentucky Derby renewal. Jockey Angel D. Rivera, one of the saddle stars of the winter season in Florida, plans to resume riding with the opening of Lincoln Fields at Washington Park. Rivera is recovering from a foot injury suffered in a riding mishap at Gulfstream Park. James Rushin, manager of the Kentucky Hotel; his daughter, Judith, and son, Jim Tom, were backstretch visitors this morning. Rushin would welcome a dead heat between Olympia and Johns Joy in the Derby, for he is a long-time friend of owners Frederick Hooper and John Kinard; also their trainers, Ivan H. and Monte Parke, of the noted Parke racing family. Joe Stevens, one of the owners of the noted Harry M. Stevens, Inc., sports catering firm, is an arrival at the Derby course. Bill Merkle and Otto Luke, key men with the Stevens organization, also are on hand and directing a large staff which is expected to serve over 100,000 patrons on Kentucky Derby Day, May 7. Louis Resseguet is an arrival from his New Orleans home for a visit with his son, William, who conditions the Mrs. John S. Letellier and Samuel Rosen thoroughbreds. Rosens Black Sambo recently accounted for the Lafayette Stakes at Keeneland. Raymond Yelton; one-time riding star and now the proprietor of a cafe and grill at Latonia, Ky., is an arrival here and he will remain for the Kentucky Derby renewal on May 7. Ben A. Jones, general manager of Warren Wrights Calumet Farm stable, stated this morning that he had taken second call on the saddle services of apprentice Gordon Glisson for the Downs meeting. Glisson is presently leased to Clifford Mooers, whose Old Rockport is a definite Kentucky Derby starter. Murl K. Aten, auditor general of Michigan, and Dale Munk, director of the audit division of the state audit department, were here today, making a study of the totali-sator, a similar type of which is being installed at the Detroit Fair Grounds. Walter U. Ridenour, trainer of the 1948 Kentucky Oaks victress, Challe Anne, has another capable hopeful for this years edition of the "Derby for Fillies" in Fred L. Flanders Blue Note. The strapping three-year-old daughter of Challedon — Victorious Ann came in this morning from Keeneland. Hal Price Headley, prominent Blue Grass owner and breeder, and president of the Keeneland race course, sent over the Oaks candidates Pella and Flying Time from the Versailles Pike track. The remainder of the Headley thoroughbreds are stabled in Lex- ington, from where they will be shipped directly to Belmont Park. Mrs. William E. Smith stated that the three-year-old filly Lady Greenwood would be retained by the estate of her late husband and would be campaigned during the Downs meeting under the care of trainer Howard Wells. Harry Goldstines horses arrived from Florida and will campaign here before moving north. Robert Saxton, former sports editor of the Cincinnati Enquirer and now a steward at several midwest tracks, witnessed the inaugural day sport. Saxton will miss the Kentucky Derby for the second straight time. Last year he was ill and unable to attend and this year his official duties are to take him to Beulah Park on Derby Day. Saxton, presently enjoying excellent health, has a busy 1949 schedule. Frank Rauzier, former jockey for the late Dan Lehan, is at Churchill Downs after a long tour of Army service, and he will serve as outrider here during the last eight days of the spring meeting, relieving Joe Moran, who will journey to Illinois for the Lincoln Fields season. Jimmy Bracken is looking after the engagements of apprentice Jerry West and the journeyman reinsman Darell Madden [ at Churchill Downs.
