Big Ping Scores Again at Churchill" Duplicates Recent o Keeneland Victory TO Norris Sophomore Holds On £ Tenaciously to Lead Home Grain Market, Hals Linda g CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., £ * May 4. — Big Ping, a representative of the R. F. Norris unit, drove to a game decision x in the six-furlong fourth race, one of the C better offerings on the afternoons agenda. 55 Under the capable guidance of the veteran O reinsman, Mel Peterson, the Norris per- former raced within easy striking distance -of the early leaders, assumed the lead enter- ing the stretch an, abetted by a jam near the furlong marker, held on tenaciously to ■ reach the finish a half length before Nate en L. Raffelmans rapidly-closing Grain Mar-ket. In third position an additional two o and one-quarter lengths to the arrear of the leaders came Mrs. J. T. Combs Hals Linda. Highly regarded in the betting, Big Ping rewarded his innumerable supporters .80 in the straight tote pool and traversed the distance in a sparkling 1:12%. He had won his previous start at Keeneland. The running of the event was marred when, during the stretch run, Mrs. Samuel Rosens Podner, who was racing on the outside, came over sharply on McMahan and Ramseys Macks First, forcing the latter to take up and in turn bump the Brown Hotel Stables Gay Henrietta. Following the jam, Big Ping continued on unmolested and had enough left at the end to repel Grain Market. Summer-Like Weather Todays card was presented in continued summer-like weather which has graced the Falls City area during the past several days. The mercury again was in the low nineties and the sun shone brightly throughout the afternoon. A large and representative crowd was in attendance including scores of Derbytown visitors who have already arrived upon the scene for this years Diamond Jubilee edition of the famed Kentucky classic. O. F. Woodwards Jatak, comparatively overlooked in the mutuel wagering, drove to a game verdict over the Bensinger and Millers early pacesetter Harrys Pride in the six-furlong opener. Capably handled by Jimmie Duff, the winner responded gamely when called upon for the stretch run and was along in the final strides to prevail over Harrys Pride in a photograph finish. In third position a length to the rear of the closely lapped leaders came Mrs. Reid Luginbuels Vinita Toney. Jatak completed her assignment in 1:13% and returned 2.80 straight. The second race, a five-furlong test for maiden two-year-olds, was accounted for by Oddie Clellands Wolf Whistle in rather handy fashion. Second choice, in the spec- ulation, the winner, promising son of Barre Granite — Gonterdo, went to the front soon after the break and retained his advantage to the finish to triumph by two lengths over James C. Ellis Squint. Bobb Ace, favored in the compact field of seven, held on willingly for the minor spoils of the purse, but could not seriously threaten the top ones. , • : [ . • : t l
