Second Son Makes Good for Hartwick Takes Runyon Purse in First Start for New Owner; Beats Gray Star by Two Lengths SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 4. — Second Son, sporting the silks of , Clarence Hartwick, bested his six rivals to | take a two-length decision over J. H. Carrs I Gray Star in the Damon Runyon Purse ! that served as the feature on todays mid- , week program. Four lengths back of the runner-up, Ray Metcalfs Gracie Son closed stoutly to earn the minor award by a length and one-half over D. A. Rosen-baums Reborn. Claimed for ,000 on April 23, at Havre de Grace. Second Son lost no time in distinguishing himself as a very useful performer on the New England circuit. Todays triumph netted the new owner ,400 towards the purchase price. Ideal weather was the order of the day as Suffolk Downs entertained a crowd of 13.607 with their first mid-week card of the 33 -day meeting. Favorite players did not enjoy the mild afternoon, however, as the choices of the first six races failed to race to expectations. The track dried out fast from the muddy condition of Tuesdays racing, but was termed good and showing signs of getting faster as the afternoon waned. Second Son was timed in 1:1225 for the six furlongs and held at second choice, paying .80. Cadet Dan Takes Command In the Runyon, Cadet Dan lost no time in taking command before the field had straightened away for the run down the backstretch. The Marteniz colt, under the guidance of George Hettinger, drew away by nearly two lengths as the first quarter was reached. Frank Zehr, on Second Son, was biding his time in the runner-up slot. Octorora, from the barn of H. A. Kimball, Gray Star and Reborn were next in line about a length apart as the far turn was reached. Cadet Dan showed signs of tiring under the swift pace and started to drift out on the bend, cacthing Second Son on the outside while making his move. The pair went to the middle of the track, but Zehr had little trouble straightening the son of Economic soon enough to stave off a mild bid from Gray Star and benefited by remaining along the inner rail. From the furlong marker to the end, Second Son added more distance to his margin and at the end was going smoothly under a steady hand ride. Reborn, who was good enough to win the I Governors Handicap at Narragansett Park [ last spring, failed to show advantage in the Runyon. but should improve off the effort and become a threat to later handicap events over the middle distance route. Second Son was acquired by his new owner too late to be made eligible for the Suffolk Downs stakes to be run at the spring meeting, but appears a certainty to be a candidate for later stakes on the New England circuit.
