Undefeated thus far this year, Roman Sandal, under a good ride from William McKinley Cook, streaked to .the end of the six furlongs a nose before Raymond An-kenbauers Porters Broom, ridden by Lois Cook. Two and one-half lengths off the leaders, Joe D. Pucketts Warmed Over was along for third while Mrs. A. M. Creechs early speedster, Grey Mike, wound up fourth in the sprint. The Dunn and Kirkpatrick-owned colt, victor in two Keeneland engagements and one previous outing at the Downs, was second choice with the crowd of over 9,000 spectators on hand this pleasant afternoon, returning his supporters 22 to 5. Roman Sandal shouldered 119 pounds" and stepped the six furlongs of the Hodgenville over the fast track in a sparkling 1:11. Two Dominate Early Running After the good start was effected, Porters Broom assumed command before going a furlong and the favorite hooked up with Grey Mike, the pair dominating the running until well inside the stretch. In the meantime, Roman Sandal was kept within striking distance of the flying leaders and he didnt begin his bid until settled in the middle of the track for the drive to the wire. Grey Mike chucked it when near the finish, but Porters Broom stuck diligently to his task, while Roman Sandal steadily whittled away at the Ankenbauer geldings advantage. The Cook brothers then went to work on their mounts and, after a most interesting and hotly-contested stretch duel, Roman Sandal nipped Porters Broom in the last strides. Carrol Hart, who was broke and trained at Douglas Park by her Louisville owner, J. B. FJoyd, whipped 11 other two-year-olds in the five-furlong opener under a hustling ride from Lois Cook. Carrol Hart slipped through next to the inner rail at the stretch turn and then beat out Brown Hotel Stables Panache by a head margin, while four* lengths off the lapped leaders, E. R. Mills Battle King earned the show award. Joseph A. Goodwins Umbrella Man gave a fair performance to annex fourth money in the juvenile dash. Carrol Hart paid 1.40. Tom Grays Hill Count, with Otto Grohs at the reins, scored a popular accounting in the three-quarters mile second event. Hill Count was under strong pressure during the drive, but whipped Charles Rauschs Ocean Corned, a length separating the two top ones at the final marker. Jacob j Shers Our Peggy, pacemaker until inside the stretch, lasted for third. Hill Count, successful in his previous Downs outing, was the 7-to-10 choice. Leo Wagner, master of Wagner Farm, Osgood, Ind., sent out another of his home-breds to achieve major honors in the six and one-half furlongs third, the aged gelding, Jimpin, driving to a length and one-quarter decision under Herb Lindbergs Guidance. H. A. Trevellyans Jofourth finished second in the sprint, with Warner L. Jones Baluster, favorite in the field of 12, saving third. j
