Gnu Registers Third Score in Row Outsprints Zeeland At Garden State Permane Drives Carolyn K. Gelding to Wire as Charge Moves Up on Claiming Scale By FRED GALIANI Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 13. — Gnu won his third straight race at the meeting today, coming to the finish of the six-furlong Deerfield Purse a length and a half before J. A. Bayards extreme outsider, Zeeland. Another length and a half back in third place came J. Keelors George Crump. Gnu, racing for the Carolyn K. Stable, paid .80 under a good ride by Bobby Permane, but the real surprise was Zeeland, who closed with a late rush on the rail to return 2.00, 9.20 to his scattered backers in the crowd of 16,971 who turned out on a raw and blustery day. Gnu covered the six furlongs in 1:12% over the good track. The Brockmeade Stable-bred had won two previous sprints here with comparative ease but the six-year-old Okapi horse was under a hard drive this afternoon. The Deerfield, one of the better races on the card, pitted ,000 to ,500 claimers. Gnu, in for a somewhat higher price than his last two races, was a stake winner in his younger days when he raced for the Brookmeade Stable. The winner, Net Result and Delong were the three betting horses in the field, with the rest of the 12 horses going to the post at long prices. Gnu Fourth. Along Rail Delong and Jungle Wind :were away fast at the start of the Deerfield, with Gnu laying in fourth spot along the rail. Delong led in the run down the backstretch, while the field was well bunched with Zeeland back in the pack. Delong was still in front rounding the turn, but Gnu had moved up in second place as Jungle Wind faded and as they hit the half-mile pole, Permane had dead aim on the leader. Straightening away for the stretch run, Permane applied the whip diligently and Gnu responded and swept past Delong. Although he had a clear lead, Permane was taking no chances and kept after his mount right to the wire. It was good he did, for down on the rail a flash of gray shot past most of the horses as Zeeland came on for second. At the speed Zeeland was going he would have passed Gnu and won the race if it were a couple of yards longer. George Crump was just up for third over the tiring Delong after being sandwiched between horses for most of the race. Delong, a notorious front runner, was making his second start of the year and again stopped when it counted. In his last race he finished second.
