Joliet Stakes Attracts Thirty-Six Nominations Mighty Moment, Happy Carrier, Royal Flavor in Saturdays Race HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 13.— Thirty-six two-year-old colts and geldings have been nominated for the twenty-fifth running of the 0,000 Joliet Stakes which features the Lincoln Fields program at Hawthorne next Saturday* May 17. They include several which already have attained distinction as stakes winners during the early portion of the 1952 season. The Joliet annually is the first stakes event for juveniles- in Illinois. It was first run in 1926 not run in 1932 and 1934 and until 1948 was open to fillies as well as. colts and geldings. In fact, some of its most distinguished winners were such fillies as Anita Peabody, Capture, and Blue Delight. With the great expansion of racing Lincoln Fields established the Miss America Stakes for fillies exclusively and restricted the Joliet to male members of the juvenile division. General manager Peter J. ODonnell and racing secreetary Larry Bogenschutz expressed complete satisfaction with both the number and quality of the 1952 nominees. The class of several of the nominees has been definitely established. Among these are Milton Resseguets Mighty Moment, winner of the first two-year-old race of 1952 on January 1 at New Orleans. The half -brother to Tiger followed that victory by winning a division of the Proteus Stakes at the New Orleans Fair Grounds. Mighty Moment is a chestnut son of the gray stallion Mighty Story, whose victories in the Peabody Memorial and other Chicago stakes thrilled local turf devotees only a few years ago. Mighty Story won the Lincoln Fields Peabody Memorial in 1946 for the Chicagoan John Marsch. The handsome gray now- stands at the Hillandale Farm of Samuel M. Look at Lexington, Ky. Mighty Moment was inrthe first crop and has already proved to have been a bargain yearling purchase for ,700. He is out of Starless Moment, dam of the high class stakes horse and sire, Tiger. Other stakes winners named for the Joliet include William H. Veenemans Louisville-owned Happy Carrier, who took down one division of the Lafayette Stakes at Keeneland. Another is Royal Flavor, owned by the Texas oil man, Sam E. Wilson, Jr., who also owns the three-year-old Gushing Oil, sensation of the early 1952 season when he won the Louisiana Derby, Arkansas Derby and Blue Grass Stakes. Gushing Oil is a candidate for Lincoln Fields Peabody Memorial on Decoration Day. Royal Flavor won a division of the Bashf ord Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs. He cost his wealthy Texas owner only ,200, being purchased for that figure out of Del Holemans Pilot Knob consignment of broken yearlings at Keeneland last fall.
