Comes to Phelps1 Defense BELMONT PARK. Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 13. — Morris Dixon, Jr., trainer of James McHughs Jam, has come to the defense of jockey Earl* Phelps, who appeared from the stands to lack confidence when winning the Appleton Memorial last week. Dixon pointed out that Jam is a very hard horse to ride, and has little respect for his fences. "I thought that Earl did a remarkable job in merely staying on, not to mention winning in one of the fastest races of the last 15 years," Dixon said.
