Fleet Field of Six In Suffolk Feature Oreo and George Davie Entry Faces Royal Marvel, Double Winner at Current Meeting By AVERY BROWN Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 13. — Quality is empahsized over quantity at Suffolk Downs tomorrow as a small but classy band of sophomores is scheduled to vie in the featured mile and 70 -yards Beacon Purse. A half dozen three-year-olds, some of whom are considered the best in this sector with a chance at the rich Yankee Handicap to be run next month, have been named to the mid-week feature. J. L. Friedmans Oreo will be given an acid test tomorrow when he faces Eddie Siravos Royal Marvel in the Beacon. George Davie, another Friedman sophomore, shapes up as a capable running mate. Jay-Bo"b Stables Im Sandy, J. Annaloro and S. Tereses Nola Hash and Starr Ranchs Fancy Talk round out the field to compete for the ,500 purse. Actual top weight of the Beacon goes to Royal Marvel who carries 115 pounds, but Oreo must tote 112 with a five -pound apprentice allowance claimed. Fancy Talk is next in line with 110 pounds, three more than the filly, Nola Hash. George Davie is in under 105 with an apprentice allowance and the lightweighted Im Sandy has 102 including the bug allowance. After First 1952 Victory Oreo is still in quest of his first victory of. the current year, having failed in 10 previous starts against some of the best three-year-olds in the country. The Rhode Island-bred son of Bull Dandy — Bus Girl closed out the 1951 season with a triumph in a division of the Endurance at Bowie. Twice during the past winter, Oreo was second behind the highly regarded Happy Go Lucky at Fair Grounds in New Orleans. The Friedman gelding was third in his first outing at Laurel this spring, beaten over three lengths by1 Cinda and Pintor in the Cherry Blossom Stakes. His next start was in the Experimental No. 1 at Jamaica, finishing sixth beaten five lengths. Returning to Maryland, Oreo closed ground in the Chesapeake Stakes but had to be content with third money behind Handsome Teddy and Jampol. He then failed badly in the Wood Memorial at Jamaica. In his lone outing here, Oreo was the victim of a stablemate, Rushing Jack, when beginning his move along the inside. The race was won by Royal Marvel, with Im Sandy taking the runner-up post ahead of Oreo. The Friedman ace was beaten only a length and a half at the six furlongs. Tomorrows distance should suit Oreo and give his handlers a good line on his future in the impending three-year-old stakes. Royal Marvel is one of the most consistent sprinters in this area, taking an unbeaten record over the local oval into tomorrows race. Twice, the son of Royal Nap has turned back creditable opponents at six furlongs. Embarking on his three-year-old career at Tropical Park in January, Royal Marvel defeated a band of sophomores in an allowance event at six furlongs. Sparingly raced in the Sunshine state, the colt appeared only one other time, that being at Hialeah when he was devoid of speed while competing against Handsome Teddy, Quiet Step and others. At the recent LincolnDowns meeting, the Siravo hope won once in four trys. Of the. others in the Beacon, Im Sandy must rate the best on, her recent bang-up second to Royal Marvel. Carrying the same impost, 105 pounds, the daughter of The Sultan came from last place at the head of the lane to miss by a half length", suggesting that should her tour of the course tomorrow be along the same lines, the added distance will be favorable.
