— : : ► Well -Matched Field of Seven In Knight Commander Purse HedgewoodWell Fancied Off* Recent Races; Best Doings, Dad Also to Have Support HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 13.— Entries for the third day of racing at this West Side course were late in filling, notwithstanding the fact that all concerned were of the opinion that racing secretary Lawrence C.Bogenschutz would be swamped with contestants for all of the races in his condition book following the termination of, the recent horsemens strike. The Knight Commander Purse, nominal event on tomorrows program, attracted only seven entrants, racing in six interests. However, what the mile and one-sixteenth essay may lack in quantity it will more than compensate by the fact that the seven racers are evenly matched. Top weight honors in the Knight Commander fall to Mrs. John L Oglesbys Hedgewood, who will answer the bugle under a 114-pound impost. He will be asked to concede from six to 11 pounds to his rivals. Slated to oppose the Oglesby gelding are the Bernard W. Landy duo of Best Doings and French Admiral, O. H. Pohl-mans Grand Egyptian, N. G. Bouchards Fair Appraisal, G. R. Weinkoffs Kanza and William S. Clines Dad. Unsuccessful at Oaklawn Hedgewood was unsuccessful in a limited campaign at Oaklawn when asked to display his stretch-running talents in sprint events. Hedgewood accounted for five victories last year, including four straight, which closed out his Chicago stay. Following the Oaklawn session, Hedgewood was sent to Keeneland where he finished third to Seaward and Ruhe in the Ben Ali Handicap, and then was third in the Clark at Churchill. These performances most likely will accord him the role of favorite in tomorrows encounter. Best Doings won one race at Sportsmans Park during the early portion of that meeting, but failed to repeat when matched against slightly superior rivals. The Landy performer is probably more adept at sprint distances, but has some creditable efforts over a distance of ground. French Admiral, who recently was purchased by Landy from the Reverie Knoll Farm of Freeman Keyes, showed but a minimum of ability on Mondays opening-day card, when he was far back in an allowance race won by My Dividend. John Adams will be astride one of the Landy entrants. Dad appears favorably placed in tomorrows race and must be regarded the dark horse. The Cline charge is at his best over a muddy or heavy strip, which is not likely to prevail tomorrow. However, he is always dangerous whether he catches a track to his particular liking or not. Dad won his first start of the year at Oaklawn Park. Fair Appraisal and the others could score should they choose to come forth with their best efforts.
