Y., May 13. — Circle M Farms War Poppy, the outsider of the small field, came from last place to win the featured Natchez Purse by a half length from Addison Stables favored Arise today. Abe Levinsons High Bracket was almost two lengths away at the end of the mile, and three lengths before Phantom Farms Nullify, who completed the field. Hedley Woodhouse rode War Poppy,- who paid 9.10, and stepped the mile in 1:37%. A crowd of 19,060 turned out in chilly, windy, overcast weather. The sport was comparatively formful, with the exception of the hurdle race and the feature. War Poppy had finished a weary fourth in his two previous starts, won on a sloppy track at Jamaica before that. He is a five-year-old son of Roman — Yellow Poppy, by Man o War. The Natchez was set up nicely for War Poppy as High Bracket, Nullify and Arise raced almost as a team before him to the head of the stretch. War Poppy was some three lengths away, going rather easily. Curving for home, Arise moved up on the outside and was left in the lead when High Bracket and Nullify stopped. At that instant, War Poppy, who had appeared to be looking for an opening between horses, surged up on the outside. Ovie Scurlock shook his stick at Arise and the favorite responded somewhat, but without too much conviction. War Poppy continued steadily on the outside, drew level inside the sixteenth pole, where Scurlock tapped Arise once, not*too severely, and got no response from the gesture. War Poppy then went on to score by a half length. Eugene Constantin, Jr.s Royal Bay Gem, a son of the Australian Royal Gem II. — Bayadere, by Chance Shot, outf inished Mrs. Joseph Walker, Jr.s favored Moby Dick to win the fifth event by a head. Ogden Phipps Heredity ran an even race to be third, two and a half lengths away and a head before Brandywine Stables fast-finishing Hellcat. Gerald Porch rode Royal Bay Gem, who paid .30 and needed :54 for the four and a half furlongs against what had.become a stiff headwind. George D. Wideners Platan, the favorite for the fourth event, reached the finish of the four and a half furlongs a length and a half before Ben F. Whitakers Star Request, a full brother to My Request. The track presidents colt bore over steadily, however, while leading Star Request from the start, and, after viewing the patrol films, the stewards disqualified him "for causing interference." There also seemed to be a bit of jamming in the haze that shrouded the upper stretch. Platan was ridden by Eric Guerin, while Dave Gorman guided Star Request. The Whitaker colt paid .70 as second choice and was tele-timed a sluggish :53%. Joe W. Browns Matagorda finished third in this,, dash, moving up to second, while Mrs. R. A. Firestones Reinforce was given third money, after finishing a distant fourth.
