General Meeting of HBPA At Tanforan This Evening To Further Discuss Their Purse Dispute With Hollywood Turf Club TANFORAN. San Bruno. Calif., May 2 — A general meeting of members and directors of the Horsemens Benevolent and Protective Association is scheduled for the Tanforan clubhouse at 7:00 oclock Monday evening and at that time there will be a further discussion of their purse dispute with the Hollywood Turf Club. Robert Read, national president of the HBPA, Tom Sheehan, public relations man for the organization, and C. Ray Robinson, attorney for the western division, are flying here from Louisville to attend the meeting. The horsemen are holding out for purses amounting to 40 per cent of Hollywood Parks share of the pari-mutuel handle during the meeting which gets under way a week from Tuesday. The tracks offer is ,600,000. which the horsemen say falls short of their demand based on an anticipated handle of 00,000,000. Meanwhile Dwight Murphy, chairman of the California Horse Racing Board, has proposed a compromise purse formula which would give horsemen 4 per cent of the first 0,000,000 handled, 3 per cent of the second 0,000,000 and 2.7 of all money wagered above that figure. Bert Thompson, manager of the western division of the Jockeys Guild, expects to attend the horsemens meeting and he himself has called a conference of the jockeys the following evening. He said that while the Guild itself is neutral in the dispute the sympathies of most cf the jockeys are with the horsemen. A number of horsemen at Tanforan this morning received telegrams from the Hollywood Park management stating, in effect, that if they do not notify Hollywood of their shipping plans by noon Monday the stalls they previously reserved will be allotted on a first -come-first-served basis.
