Is Proud Successful in Betsy Ross "Leads Throughout In Camden Stake Reaches Wire Almost Length Before Task Fleet to Provide Owner With Two Stake Wins By FRED CM I AM Staff Coriespondent GARDEN STATE PARK. Camden. N. J , May 2. — Although it was an utterly miserable damp day, it was as beautiful as could be for Harry Isaacs, owner of the Brookfield Farm. The Maryland owners Is Proud, under jockey Jimmy Stout, reeled off a front-running victory in the 0,000 added Betsy Ross Stakes here today, just a short while after he was informed his I Appeal won the Bowie Kindergarten Stakes to remain undefeated. Is Proud, a homebred daughter of Fairy Manhurst or Hampden out of We Hail, took the lead at the start and led his 14 rivals a merry chase, reporting home three-quarters of a length before McDermott and Wellmans Task Fleet, conqueror of the mighty Bubbley in her last race. Third, a similar margin back, came Ridge Stables Slave Girl, who closed fast through the stretch. Is Proud returned .60 to her backers ,in the crowd of 31,275 that turned out for jthe sport on a chilling day that was more befitting a fall meeting. Time for the six furlongs was 1:12 over a good track. j Is Proud, winner of the Matron Stakes at Belmont last fall, was making her second start of the year and scampered off with the 7,750 net Betsy Ross Purse under scale weight of 121 pounds. In her first outing of the season she was moved up to fourth in a disqualification a* Belmont. Isaacs Accepts Trophy Isaacs was present this afternoon and accepted the Betsy Ross trophy from Mrs Hugh L. Mehorter, wife of the chairman of the New Jersey racing commission. After the race, Jimmy Stout said, it feels good to be winning again." This was a reference to the faet that jesterday was the first day of the meeting that he entered the winners circle. With 15 horses breaking from the two gates, Is Proud from 1 and Task Fleet from 2, were away the quickest, with the Isaacs filly quickly darting into an open lead. Task Fleet was right behind here, while it was a mad scramble from there on back. Stout had Is Prcud winging all the way and well in front as they swung around the turn. Task Fleet, with Rogers up, went to the leader and got within a head of her. but Stout reached back and subjected the filly to a powerful whipping. Bounding away from The Goad. Is Proud took off again adn left Task Heet in the last sixteenth. Slave Girl, pocketed early, finally got racing between horses and closed with a powerful rush, but it wes too late to menace the leaders. Finishing down on the rail, she was going fastest of all and was up for third over J. S. Phipps Spinning Top. Emardee. who was a slisht favorite over the winner, finished twelfth. Its May. another Brookfield horse, had trouble in the race and was forced back on the turn. Second Running of Stake This was the second running of the Betsy Ross Stakes at Garden State, a race of the same name being renewed for many years at Suffolk Downs before they abandoned it. Last year it went to Jouett Shouses Cinda. Despite miserable, marrow -penetrating weather, a crowd estimated at 1,600 turned out for the races, proving once again that racing is far and away the nations most popular spectator sport. The Daily Double races resulted in a 6.40 pay off to those who coupled Mrs. C. Carlinos Santas Girl and Mrs. C. Silvers Jeepers-creeper. Santas Girl, who was disqualified from first place Wednesday, made good today as an odds-on choice and kept a lot of Daily Double hopes alive. Under Charley Burr, Santas Girl stayed on the outside of horses and came from off the pace to triumph by two length! over Tower Hill Farms James Beauty, who had the lead in the stretch. Third in the field of 11 claiming horses was Main Line Stables Billies Beam, beaten three-quarters of a length The time for the six furlongs was 1:13% over a good track, only a fifth lower than Santas Girl went over a fast track, only to have her number taken down. The Psychi Bid filly paid a picayune .60* Jeeperscreeper upset in the second race, charging up on the rail to snatch victory by a head over J. Goodwins Keeping Posted. Jeeperscreeper was good for 5.40 straight, the majority of the crowd sending A. R. Bentons Dollargofast off at 3 to 2 favorite. Third was D and H Stables Sul mari. Jack Skelly threaded Jeeperscreepe through the pack in 1:13 for the horsej second score i" H starts this year
