WT-* — — ; r% J I J GES STAND *y charles hatton CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville. Ky., May 2.— The Kentucky Oaks, or "Filly Derby" if you like, was a good show and went to a potential champion in Mrs. Gene Markeys Bubbley. She is by Bull Lea out of Blue Delight and is a sister to last seasons Kentucky Oaks heroine, Real Delight. So far as we are aware, this marks the first time in the 79 years history of the Downs stake it has been captured by sisters. And it will be interesting to note if, having emulated Real Delight in this mile and one-sixteenth, the rangy bay Calumet filly can also duplicate her feat of winning the Blackeyed Susan and Coaching Club Oaks. The three races have come to be known as the "Fillies Triple Crown," and only Real Delight and Wistful have brought off successes in all of them. While Bubbley imposed her will on Cerise Reine in the Derby eve stake, it should be mentioned that Mrs. Rices resolute filly was trying to concede Mrs. Markeys five pounds. In the mile and one-sixteenth of the Blackeyed Susan at Baltimore on May 30, they will meet at 121 pounds each. But Bubbley is improving and we should hesitate to guess this weight shift will alter the form of the local stake at Pimlico. Bubbley had seemed well on her way to the two-year-old title in her division last spring and early summer, before she contracted the cough and lost the honors by default, Sweet Patootie compiling a more impressive record through a longer campaign. Indications are, however, that Mrs. Shaffers tiny mare has her endurance limitations. By a coincidence, it is another filly owned by a sportswoman, Mrs. Ben Whitakers Grecian Queen, whom Easterners expect to prove a lioness in the paths of Bubbley and Cerise Reine in the remaining Oaks events. She is no such Amazon as either of the Western fillies for size, but she has a big heart, and demonstrated con-r clusively at Pimlico and Jamaica last fall she can stay Bubbley Brings Off Sister Act in Ky. Oaks It Is On to Pimlico for Classic Colts Many Improvements at Baltimore Course Calumets Pointing for Chicago Campaign a mile and a sixteenth when she won a division of the Marguerite and the Demoiselle. Altogether, it appears that the worth of the seasons fillies warrants the many valuable stakes associations are offering for them. AAA What is left of the Derby horses will journey soon to Pimlico, where they will train, or perhaps we should say, "freshen up," for the Preakness on May 23. It is diabolical what running in the Derby can do to a colt who is not a genuine "Derby horse," but one really cant blame people for hoping they have a classic prospect, and frequently this is not anything they can guess until after the race. Royal Bay Gem is the one Derby starter who was assured of going to Pimlico before the result of the local race because the Constantin string is making its headquarters there, though there were tentative arrangements to ship Correspondent and Ram o War Tuesday. And Bill Winfrey had planned to send Netive Dancer to Baltimore, by way of Belmont Park, arriving on the Hilltop three days previous to the "Run for the Blackeyed Susan." Two perhapses later, he was giving the Polynesian colt his final breeze on the Preakness scene. When those who do get to Pimlico arriv%, they will find that John D. Jackson has arranged to make its patrons more comfortable since the meeting last fall, particularly if they are trying to place a wager, for the mutuel facilities have been extended. Also, the clubhouse patrons on opening day, this Monday, will be pleased this structure has been remodeled and enlarged, the architecture harmonizing with the mel low Gay Nineties theme of the original structure. Twice as many of the carriage trade now may dine on the porch fronting the track, as it has been doubled in width. And the new turf course already has a stand of grass. AAA Pimlicos meet, which extends 21 days through May 30. will be the first under its new management. A group headed by Ben and Herman Cohen, Cary Boshamer and Lou Pondfield, took the reins last fall and immediately set about improving its facilities and programs. Among other innovations at this meeting is a policy of rotating the patrol and placing judges, experiencing these men in serving in either capacity. This is a bit like the "School for Racing Officials" in New York. Lou Pondfield, who is a progressive, also had planned to broaden the purse distribution, offering awards back to fifth position. But it is understood the TRA directorate prevailed upon him to abandon this plan. We should be interested to know why, if it isnt impertinent, for it struck us as a sound enough idea. Although the Preakness naturally is the piece de resistance at Pimlico, there are also The Dixie and The Blackeyed Susan, both features of importance. The club also will honor the memory of the late turf journalist, Joe H. Palmer, during Preakness Week, when one of the overnight features is to be named for him. AAA The Calumets are going directly from Churchill Downs to Chicago this spring, with occasional raids East. Object: the fantastically rich Arlington-Washington stakes. Mark-Ye-Well is growing a new hoof, Real Delight has a knee, and Breeze By a hole in his head, but the betting is that the Calu -ets and Eddie Arcaro will win their share of Ben Lindheimers purse distribution. Bubbley still is lighter of flank than Jones says he could wish, but she is by nature less robust than her sister.
