Narragansett Park Lists Dates for Four Stakes Providence, With 5,000 Added, Will Be Renewed on July 22 Card P A W T U C K E T, R. I., May 2.— Judge James E. Dooley last week announced that four important stakes have been arranged to highlight the 24 -day meeting that opens at Narragansett Park on Monday, June 29. The King Philip Handicap; for three-year-olds and upward, will be run over one mile and a sixteenth on Saturday, July 4. Won last year by Putnam Stables consistent Combat Boots, when the added money was ,500, the value has been upped to 0,000 this season for its seventeenth running. The feature of Saturday,. July 18, will be the traditional Governors Handicap, a stake that has been decided annually since the course opened in 1934. Three-year-olds and upward are eligible for the one mile and a furlong gallop, the added money is 0,000. Mrs. J. M. Branhams Shadows Start, who always shines over the Gansett strip, was the winner in 1952. On Wednesday, July 22, comes the top race of the meeting in the Providence Stakes, a contest wherein three-year-olds are sent over one mile and a furlong. Max Kahlbaums good colt Jampol defeated Royal Marvel and Grover B. to take top honors last season, the added money remains at 5,000. This will be the seventh renewal of the Providence Stakes. Holding the spotlight on closing day, July 25, will be the popular Narragansett Nursery, a race for two-yar-olds, set also for its seventh renewal. This season racing secretary Ty Shea has stretched the distance out to six furlongs and the added money will be boosted from the ,500 of 1952 to 0,000. To bolster the stakes program Ty Shea is arranging several valuable overnight handicaps, most of which will be pointed as "preps" for the stakes races that follow several days later. Now operating at Garden State Park, Shea is working on his Narragansett condition book and this, together with stakes nomination books, will be in the mail to horsemen shortly. The Narragansett stakes follow: July 4 — King Philip Handicap, 0,000 added, three-year-olds and upward, one and one-sixteenth miles. July 18 — Governors Handicap, 0,000 added, three-year-olds and upward, one and one-eighth miles. July 22 — Providence Stakes, 5,000 added, three-year-olds, one and one-eighth miles. July 25 — Narragansett Nursery Stakes, 0,000 added, two-year-olds, six furlongs.
