Secret Meeting Surprises in Acorn Beats Wings o Morn Length ► As Grecian King Disappoints [ Completes Brady Double at Belmont, Plumed Upsetting In Earlier Race on Program By BOB HORWOOD Staff Correspondent BELMONT PARK. Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 9. — James Cox Bradys homebred filly, Secret Meeting, surged to a surprise triumph in the twenty-third running of the 5,700 Acorn Stakes today, while Mrs. Ben F. Whitakers Grecian Queen, the odds-on favorite, finished a distant sixth in the field of 12 sophomore fillies. Secret Meeting reached the end of the mile a length before Cain Hoy Stables Wings oMorn, who led Brookmeade Stables Tritium by three lengths. C. T. Chenerys Queens Moon was another two lengths out of the money. Jimmy Nichols rode Secret Meeting, who was neglected by the majority in the throng of 38,080 and paid 9.10, 6.10 and .50 across the board. It completed an astronomical double for Brady, Nichols and trainer Bobby Dotter, who had collaborated in the success of Plumed, 26.80 winner of the fourth race. Secret Meeting is a daughter of Alibhai from the stakes-winning Burgoo Maid, by Burgoo King and was bred at Bradys New Jersey farm. She had scored an upset for her debut at Jamaica April 9, paying 4.80, then had finished second to Sa-bette, herself a long shot, in her only other start. She required 1:39% for the mile on a "good" track today and added 8,450 to her earnings. Ballerina was first out of the gate in the Acorn, but quickly dropped back, while Emardee and Velure fought for the early lead, followed by Flirtatious and Queens Moon. Wings o Morn was not far off the pace, Tritium was in eighth place, while Grecian Queen was sluggish leaving the gate. Emardee Gives Way Emardee ran out of wind at the far turn, leaving Velure briefly in command, but , hard pressed by Queens Moon and Wings o Morn, who moved up strongly on the outside. Tritium was also running strongly, : while Flirtatious appeared to sulk while racing on the rail and Secret Meeting i moved into fifth place. Ovie Scurlock had Grecian Queen in high gear and the favor - . ite was threading her way along the rail. As they curved for home, Velure stopped i to a walk and Wings o Morn surged into command, appearing about to open a safe lead. At the same time, Secret Meeting • charged up on the outside, while Grecian Queen had a clear opening on the inside, • but flattened out when asked to make use • of it. Strongly ridden by Nichols, Secret , • Meeting got to Wings o Morn at the eighth pole and drew away steadily, while the : ■ Alsab filly was never threatened by Tri- • tium, though that filly finished well, , i Queens Moon tired after a good effort. I After the race, Nichols said, "She did it , • today and the farther they ask her to go, , , the more she seems to like it." Ovie Scurlock said, "Grecian Queen didnt have an i t excuse. She saved ground, but she didnt , - have it when she needed it." Mrs. Thomas Bancroft, daughter of Wil-; liam Woodward, former chairman of The 3 Jockey Club, presented the trophy to Brady J in the winners circle. James Cox Bradys Plumer rewarded a scattered few backers with the largest pay- 3 off of the season, when she got up in the : , final strides of the fourth race to beat Mrs. t Walter M. Plumed is a daughter of Alsab from War Plumage, who won the Coaching Club American Oaks of 1939 and was herself a daughter of War Feathers, who was purchased for the then record price for a yearling filly of 0,500 in 1925, but proved a flop on the race course. War Feathers was purchased by the father of the New Jersey breeder who bred Plumed in partnership with Howard Oots. Brady is becoming something of a specialist with longshot fillies, his Secret Meeting having paid 4.80 after winning her first start at Jamaica on April 9. This was the third appearance under silks for Plumed, who finished unplaced in two starts at Jamaica. She was ridden by Jim Nichols today and required 1:27% for the seven furlongs.
