No Mistake in Purchasing Derby Winner, Dark Star Was First of Two He Liked to Be Auctioned, Guggenheim Says BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 9. — Harry F. Guggenheim, owner of Dark Star, said that there, had been no mistake on his part concerning the purchase of his Kentucky Derby winner. Published stories have ascribed the purchase of the Royal Bay Gem II. colt to an error, stating that Guggenheim had intended to purchase the colt Great Mogul, who recently broke his maiden in Maryland. "I looked at both Royal Gem colts, who were both out of Bull Dog mares, which I liked from the point of view of breeding, and both were sound, which I also liked. The colt now known as Dark Star was the first of the two to come up in the sales and I bought him for a very reasonable price. The other colt came up some nights later and I could readily have bought him had I wished to, but I was satisfied with the one I had. Also Warner Jones, breeder of the colts, offered me an opportunity to acquire Great Mogul, which I did not accept." Guggenheim said that Dark Star would be sent to Maryland in a day or so to compete in the Preakness Prep, then start in the Preakness. Asked if there were any chance of his starting in Saturdays Withers, Guggenheim said: "Native Dancer is in the Withers and my colt has run two outstanding races, while Native Dancer has two years of outstanding races. We will not run this week end." Native Dancer, of course, is also pointing for the Preakness, which will be run on May 23, a week after the Withers.
