♦ Golden Trend Makes Seasonal Kentucky Bow at Downs Today Wall Homebred Faces Sternl Opposition in Our Challenge, SpyRinginSt.MatthewsPurse CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 9. — The Kentucky spring racing season will go into is final week here Monday with the St. Matthews Purse at one mile and one-sixteenth for four-year-olds and upward, and the Lassie Purse at six furlongs for three-year-old fillies, the cofeatures on an excellent program. The St. Matthews drew an overnight field of eight seasoned distance performers while the Lassies attracted 10 of the quicker fillies quartered at the local course. A. F. Walls Golden Trend, a homebred five-year-old Eight Thirty-sired stallion, gets inthe St. Matthews with 114 pounds and will be ridden by Porter Roberts. The Wall stable star is to make his local seasonal debut and probably will go to the post choice on the strength of a gamely-achieved victory in a division of the Osceola at Gulf stream Park last March. Shouldering 109 pounds in the Florida engagement, Golden Trend stepped a mile and one-sixteenth in 1:43%. Lassies Purse Also Featured While Golden Trend certainly holds a royal chance, he will have to turn in a sharp effort to earn a trip to the winners circle. In the band named to oppose him are Pollard and Harkins Our Challenge, 115, Capital B. Farms Captain Bud, 109, Barry and Fedors Pat-the-Pilot, 121, Brown Hotel Stables The Gink, 114, Thomas Devereux Gay Hunter, 114, and Mr. and Mrs. James R. Collins Spy Ring, 107 pounds. The apprentice allowance was claimed for Our Challenge, who turned in several fine races before his shipment to Kentucky from Hot Springs. The Lassies, spotted seventh on the Monday bill, undoubtedly will develop into one of the top filly offerings of the current meeting. John A. Bell, III.s Incarnation, who recently defeated Calumet Farms Just Nell, Carl Grahams Wabash Moon, and Dixianas Windwhisper appear well-placed in the sprint. Incarnation and Windwhisper get in with 115 pounds and the apprentice allowance was claimed for Wabash Moon, 114 pounds. Jockey Johnny Heckmann is engaged for Windwhisper, Douglas Dodson will handle Incarnation and apprentice Forrest Kaelin is to be at the reins on Wabash Moon. Completing the Lassies band is C. E. Buckleys Full Circle, Ned Brents Vadapur, I. J. Collins Miss Tete, E. M. Goemans Carriage Trade II., Brown Hotel Stables Blessed Little, Shady Brook Farms Actuate, and Brumfield Brothers Happy Deb. Full Circle, Vadapur and Actuate have been showing well in recent engagements and the Lassies distance will be advantageous to each member of the trio.
