Miss Joanne Drives Hard To Capture Constitution Hugs Rail Around Final Turn to Whip Epic King at Suffolk Oval By FRED GALIANI Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 9. — Slipping through on the rail as the field came out of the fog back on the final turn, J. M. Grieves Miss Joanne found racing room and hugging the rail, dashed to a length victory in the Constitution Handicap here today. In second place was Mrs. J. H. Woodcocks Epic King, who led throughout the mile and a sixteenth except for the part which counted most. Third in the field of 12 was Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Grants Africance. Jockey Dick McLaughlin, top rider at the session, was astride Miss Joanne, who paid .80 as the second choice. Time for the race was 1:45 over a fast track. A crowd of 26,268 attended the afternoons races and a fog sweeping in from the sea obscured the backstretch through most of the later races. Following the race, McLaughlin accepted the trophy from Gypsy Rose Lee, who made the presentation. The favorite in the Constitution field, C. H. Everitts Supremes Bub, a winner here during the week, finished seventh. Miss Joanne, trained by his owner, is a daughter of Challenge Me — Jobelle, and won the Rockingham Juvenile Handicap last year. She carried 114 pounds in the three-year-old fixture today, the topweight being the failing Supremes Bub. This was only the third start of the year for the miss and she finished second in her last outing, the Faneuil Hall Handicap, to Star Chief, another in the beaten field this afternoon. Epic King got away first in the Constitution and opened up a wide lead, with Africance, Star Chief and Triumphant right behind him. Going into the fog bank on the far side, Miss Joanne had only two horses beaten. Supremes Bub went with the leaders for a half mile and then tired. As they came around the turn, Epic King was daylight in front, but McLaughlin sent Miss Joanne through on the rail, getting his room and the filly was flying as they pounded down pay-off lane. Zehr, on Epic King, kept his mount going as hard as he could but the gelding was tiring and unable to resist Miss Joannes bid. Africance held his forward position safe and lasted for third money. There was no added money to the race and victory netted Miss Joanne ,500.
