Fourteen Seek Swift Stakes Honors Tahitian King May Rule Post Favorite Lotus Eater, Dictar Assured Support in Belmont Preview For Saturdays Withers Mile BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I. N. Y., May 9. — Three-year-olds again dominate the racing scene at Belmont Park next week, with the possibility that some fresh talent will emerge to further confuse the championship picture, and Alfred G. Van-derbilts Native Dancing having a chance to make some amends for his Kentucky Derby defeat. Fourteen sophomores have been entered for Mondays fifty-second running of the 0,000 Swift Stakes, including Ben F. Whitakers Tahitian King, Greentree Stables Lotus Eater, George Auerbachs Dictar and Mrs. George F. Spears Real Brother. Most of the candidates for this seven furlongs are also eligible to the 5,000 Withers Mile, which will have its seventy-eighth running on Saturday, and those of them who make the best showing in the Swift are expected to oppose Native Dancer. Four of the Swift candidates are ineligible to the Withers. Bernadotte Stables Dandolo, Mrs. C. O. Iselins Bradley and Howell E. Jacksons Caesar Did are nominees to the Peter Pan Handicap at a mile and a furlong, while Valley Farms Impasse has no other stakes engagements at this meeting. Eligible to Belmont Stakes Tahitian King, Lotus Eater, Real Brother, Dictar, as well as Jack Amiels Sun Warrior, Brookfield Farms Isasmoothie and Maine Chance Farms Smart Apple are also eligible to the classic Belmont Stakes, which climaxes the "Triple Crown" events at a mile and a half on June 13. There are two other stakes on the agenda for the impending week at "beautiful Belmont." The 0,000 Juvenile Stakes for two-year-olds down five furlongs of the Widener straightaway will have its seventy-seventh running on Wednesday, while the Jumpers will vie in the thirty-second edition of the Charles L. Appleton Memorial Chase at about two miles on Thursday. This is a ,500 added scamper. To return to the Swift, which in its early years went to such turf immortals as Hanover, Emperor of Norfolk, Requital and Hamburg. While the stake has lost much of its signifance in recent years, it has been won by such good colts as the sprint champion, Sation, Slide Rule and Coalown. Last year, the Swift was run in two divisions, which were won by John C. Clarks Charlie McAdam and Brookmeade Stables Sky Ship. Tahitian King will probably be favored in Mondays renewal of this extended sprint. The Polynesian colt finished second to Native Dancer after setting the pace in the Wood Memorial last out and has been training well since that mile and a furlong. No rider has been named for the Whitaker colt, and Eddie Arcaro, who rode him last year and in his first two starts at Jamaica, has been engaged to pilot Hilarious for Wheatley Stable. The latter colt has been unable to win in many starts this year, both in Florida and at Jamaica, but has several good races to his credit, despite his being "touched" in the wind. Last year, Tahitian King was generally regarded as the second best juvenile after Native Dancer. Replacement for Straight Face Lotus Eater is Greentree Stables hope ; of a replacement for the injured Straight Face and is called upon to fill the role that ■ Hall of Fame occupied two years ago when Big Stretch began to sulk. The son of Devil Diver — Rare Bloom first showed promise when he "ran away and hid" from Tiger Skin in a trial, but tricky osselets limited 1 his juvenile campaign to two races, the second of which he won. This year, Lotus 1 Eater turned in a very bad race on a sloppy track at Jamaica and has since showed a 1 dislike for such footing in the morning, but ; came back with a clever performance on a fast track. After appearing hopelessly beaten at the three-furlong pole he came on when signalled by Ted Atkinson to win going away, beating the capable Belfaster by two lengths. The Swift will be Lotus Eaters first test for class. : Dictar comes from two fair races in . which he finished second to By Zeus and : Milspal. Impasse beat a large field of medi-ocrites last out. Dandolo is engaged at Garden State today. Sun Warrior beat a field , that included Virtuous on Thursday. Real t Brother, Navy Page, Hilarious and Bradley all showed class last year, which they have failed to demonstrate as sophomores. Isasmoothie stopped badly in Native Dancers : end of the Gotham, while Smart Apple fin-; ished second to the moderate Reprimand in a sprint at Jamaica. Caesar Did was : narrowly beaten by Gideon in another Ja-; maica sprint, but has the extreme outside . post position.
