I., N. Y., June 9. Standing a long drive with her own rare brand of courage, Meyer J. Kaplans Sunshine Nell captured the fifteenth running of the Top Flight Handicap today. Only a nose away in the palpitating finish was John S. Phipps Spinning Top, who led Marian W. OConnors La Corredora by a length and a half. R. S. Howards Mabs Choice was another length out of the money in the bulky, but classy, field of 15 fillies and mares. Despite her long-time popularity with Long Island fans, Sunshine Nell was comparatively neglected in the wagering, paying 4.30 to her supporters in the sunny-day throng of 21,473. Eddie Arcaro urged the willing daughter of Sun Again Nellie Flag, by American Flag over the mile and a sixteenth in a sparkling 1:43, equalling the best time of the meeting. The three-year-old filly, Cherokee Rose, won a race in the same time on May 21, when the track was sloppy, but had only 108 pounds up, compared to the 125 on "Nellie." The track was scraped along the inside rail last night and appeared decidedly faster than; it had been for the last 10 days. Kaplan Receives Trophy Owner Kaplan was presented with a trophy by Mrs. Dodge Sloane, mistress of Brookmeade Stable and his account was increased by 4,750 of the gross purse of 3,850. Sunshine Nell was rated in fourth place most of the way by Arcaro. with Gainsboro Girl and Mabs Choice flanking her around the turns. La Corredora was far -back at this stage, while Spinning Top was in seventh place until the approach of the final bend. Passing the three-furlong pole, Canadi-ana began to falter and, a few strides farther on, she stopped all over, eventually finishing next to last, with only Blanquita behind her. Lillal was a bit slower to run out of wind. As the Canadian filly tired, Gainsboro Girl moved into command, closely followed by Sunshine Nell and Lillal, while Spinning Top began to close rapidly on the outside and Mabs Choice was still very much a factor. La Corredora began to move up rapidly on the extreme outside in the upper stretch. Sunshine Nell wrested command from Gainsboro Girl as that filly wilted inside the eighth pole, but Arcaro had to sit down to one of his hardest finishes to stave off the determined run of Spinning Top. "Nellie" responded with great heart through i the final sixteenth and just lasted, while La Corredoras rush came too late. Mabs Choice ran a good race, while Gainsboro I Girl was a respectable fifth.
