y Sorceress, Fantine Busher Triumph Get Neck Verdicts In Polly Drummond Former Nears Time Mark at Delaware, Downing Sue Pat; Latter Holds Off Courtesy By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 9. Reginald N. Websters Sorceress and Maine Chance Farms Fantine Busher this afternoon registered neck victories in their respective divisions of the Polly Drummond Stakes, with the former being timed in , :5Ys and missing Beaugays track record by only the fraction. Fantine Busher was timed in :59 flat while scoring the third Polly Drummond success for Mrs. Elizabeth N. Grahams, establishment. With, four-fifths of a second difference in time, it is only natural that the victory of Sorceress was the more impressive, that Slide Rule filly moving from just off the pace to wear down Boncrist Farms Sue Pat with Barclay Stables Reddy Ro two and one-half lengths in arrears. Behind Fantine Busher was Claiborne Farms fast-closing Courtesy, while Dickey Stables Menolene was another length behind. With a crowd of 15,433 in attendance, Delaware Park was presenting two divisions of the Polly Drummond for the third time. Sorceress was strongly handled by Willie v Hartack and picked up a net purse of ,950.- Fantine Bushers score was worth 0,150 to her owner and 2.20 to her backers. Dave Gorman handled the reins astride the Mr. Busher lassie. Fourth Succes of Career Sorceress entered the race with three victories in five attempts and todays race was by far the most impressive of her ca- -reer. She held the runner-up position along the backstretch-and around the turn, then moved willingly to engage Sue Pat and out-finish her under clever urging. Reddy Ro, after a mild bid on the turn, could not get to the top pair through the homeland while holding Louis Lee Haggin H.s Smart Devil safe by a length. The favored En Rapport, racing for Mrs. Walter M. Jeffords, finished seventh in the field of nine fillies. Fantine Busher, who was making only her third public appearance, graduated from the maiden ranks in the slop at Belmont Park, then was a steady-going third behind Menolene and Courtesy in the Rancocas at Garden State. Menolene was second choice today, while most of the crowd were of the opinion that Courtesy was the best filly in her end of the Polly Drummond. Murlogg Farms Adored was in front in this division, but only briefly, with Fan-time Busher .taking over command on the turn and drawing clear to the furlong marker. Courtesy, in the meantime, was in close quarters along the inside and was unable to secure clear sailing until taken outside for the stretch run. She then closed with a bold rush to make up a half-dozen lengths through the final furlong. Menolene was beaten an additional length. In a field of fleet sprinters which contested the six-furlong third race, Mrs. Zelda Cohens War Age was victorious by two and one-half lengths in 1:11 as the .20 favorite. War Age is by War Relic Ellendale, the latter being the only filly to be disqualified in previous runnings of the Polly Drummond. She finished first in a division of the 1946 ranning, only to have her jiumber taken down for having bothered Bobanet Stables Lovely Imp, the eventual winner. f
