On tne Trot 1 Br MORRIE KURLANSKY 1 Judy Cash Paces Mile in 2:05 Flat Doctor Topmiller Sets Speedy Pace Highest Monday Handle Is Recorded MAYWOQD PARK, May wood, 111., June 9. Judy Cash, H. C. Pences homebred daughter of William Cash Neta Frisco, paced one of the fastest miles at this meeting on Monday when she annexed a Class B pace in 2:05 flat. Rated way off the pace by Russell Briten-field, the five-year-old mare "made her bid entering the back-stretch the second time around and was required tor circle her field, racing close to the outer rail. Turning for home there was but Doctor Topmiller in front of her, who collared the Kentucky pacer 20 yards from the wire to win by a neck. That marked the fifth time Monday that a horse starting from the No. 8 position and all of them returned big mutuels, the longest odds being produced by Sir Edward, victor in the second race at 48 to 1. Credit for Judy Cashs fast, clever victory must go to Doctor Topmiller, who, driven by his youthful owner, Roy Adams, led all the way and seemed a bit unlucky to get nipped at the wire. There is, however, no doubt that the five-year-old Colossal gelding is a much-improved horse and one that is equally at home over a muddy or fast surface. He is quite versatile and can be raced in whatever position his drivers elect. More should be heard of Doctor Topmiller in coming weeks. With a mutuel handle of 29,558, the highest turnover for a Monday night here, was registered, but this may have been due to the fact that there were, ten races on the card, the extra event being a mile trot for three-year-olds in the series of Northern Illinois colt stake races. With the exception of two, Bagdad and Mystie Win, the field was definitely on the poor side, with some of the starters indulging in extended breaks, but the performance of the winner, Bagdad, was praiseworthy. Glenn Hawkins, coming off a very successful week when he chalked up victories behind Capri Crusader 2, Fairbanks and Steye Tell, brought the Brookdale colt to the front! immediately td set a swift pace, and for ! a while it looked as if the winner of last J years 6,000 Illinois State Fair Stakes j would win by 10 or more lengths. Mystie Win, a Mc I Win filly owned by. C. W. Waite and driven by Dee Stover, closed with good courage to finish two lengths behind the winner, who acquired a new mark of 2:10. A very promising three-year-old pacer, The Chaplain, made his seasonal bow Monday and won his race, a 25 class pace, in impressive style from the highly regarded two-year-old, Betsy Dale. It was only the second start for The Chaplain, and to enter the 2:10 list in his first try on a night track was no mean achievement. The Mitimac colt was driven by part-owner Clay Duncan. Elmer Hartman behind Blue Blazier and James McDonald behind Main Stay entered the winners circle for the first time here on Monday. In the CC trot, Chuck Rumley guided former free-for-all trotter, Gene Long, a heat winner in the Chicago Trotting Derby a few seasons ago, to his first victory since 1952. The 12-year-old McEUen gelding is owned by Frieda Spencer of Bel-videre, 111. The youngest reinsman at this meeting is Page Floyd, 18, who scored his second victory at this meeting behind Billies Pride, a six-year-old pacing gelding by Clever Hanover . . . Last Saturdays eighth race was the chart writers delight, with starters like Josedale Double Hal, Mary Jane Clark, Ima Hanover Dale, Laura Jane Tryax ... A lady who customarily wagers on horses with the same names as her sons, friends and relatives, had a field night Saturday, as Tru Bob, Little Steve, Steve Tell and Billy Wasson were among the nine winners. A worlds record was equalled recently at Roosevelt Raceway when Royal Mist, five-year-old pacing mare by Royal Napoleon, won a class-A pace in 2:01. May E. Grattan set that mark in 1930 in a third heat at Raleigh, N. C, the best previous miles being 2:01 by Highland Ellen, 2:01 by Calumet Evelyn at four and 2:01 by Tassel Hanover . . . Katie Key, leading money-winning aged trotter in 1953, broke ilie Rosccroft Raceway trotting record last week in a free-for-all event. Driven by -Everett Osborn, she came home in 2:03 to defeat Torch Key, Duke of Lullwater, Earls Pied Piper, Thunderation and Lanier Hanover . . . Thomas B. Scott 1:58, spectacular, free-legged stallion bred, owned, trained and driven by veteran Tom Carlock, also swept to a new track record at Rosecroft last week, winning the 0,000 Henry Volo free-for-all pace in 2:0H. Three directors were elected to the board of directors at New Orleans Magnolia Park last week: Walter Gibbons, formerly racing secretary at Roosevelt Raceway and now general manager of Bay State Raceway; Edward Dougherty, New Jersey owner and president of the SOA, and Morris Pivnick, a comparatively new trotting horse owner of South Orange, N. J. Work on this newest trotting track is progressing satisfactorily and will be completed before September 1. Barns to accommodate 700 horses are well under way and will be ready August 1.. When three foals from one mare prove victorious the same evening at important meetings, it is so Unusual as to warrant mention. At Rosecroft Raceway, Osborn won with Jesse Chisholm 2:05, by Scotland 1:5914. and June Darnley, 2 2:06 by Darnley 1:59. and the same night Clint Hodgins piloted Bill Bloss 2:02, by Scotland, to victory in a Yonkers Raceway feature, the three winners being out of June Mite, 3 2:09, and were bred and still are owned by E. C. Moriarty of Wichita, Kans., and Scotch Lass 3, 2:08, by Scotland, likewise a daughter of June Mite, had previously won at the last-named meeting. All four of these horses have been, frequent winners on the. Chicago circuit in previous seasons. .
