Atlantic City Cards Mile Turf Stake for Juveniles 0,000 Absecon Island Handicap Scheduled for October 6 Program ATLANTIC CITY, N. J., June 9. A one-mile race on the grass for two-year-olds, believed to be the first such stake ever run in this country, will be included in the program for the Atlantic City race course, which opens its 50-day meeting on August 10. The race, the Absecon Island Handicap, with added money of 0,000, is scheduled as the feature of the program for October 6, closing day of the meeting, according to an announcement by John B. Kelly, president of the Atlantic City Racing Associa- tion, operators of the seashore track. The Absecon Island was formerly a grass race for three and upward. This and nine other stakes events are set for the tracks turf course as Atlantic City continues to put the accent on grass racing. The excellent one-mile grass course, which at 100 feet wide is the widest in this country, makes possible the extended program. The shore track has been among the leaders in sponsoring turf racing on the flat in this country. "We believe that this new event will be a welcome addition to the two-year-old picture," Kelly said, "and that the race will draw an attractive field, particularly in view of the fact that it precedes The Garden State, rich two-year-old fixture, which is run later at one mile and a sixteenth at Garden State Park." The tracks complete list of stakes events is expected to be announced on June 12.
