River Downs1 Week-End Card Run in Intense Heat Nearly 11,000 Patrons Stand 100 Degree Weather at Track RIVER DOWNS, California, Ohio, June 26. The hottest day of the year was. recorded here this afternoon Vai the "die hard" patrons of the thoroughbreds turned out in a number estimated at being near ll.OOO. Despitenhetseheatr,therans were enthusiastic in their acclaim of the winners but it was noted that the handle is down a bit in this 100 degree temperature. Last Saturday, for example, the handle on the fourth race was 8,764 against 5,688 in the same event today. There is little doubt that many of the Saturday patrons sought cooler environs for the days activities. The first double substitution of riders occurred in the third race here this afternoon. Both jockey Colin Knisley and Mark little were unseated at the gate. Knisley was astride Mr. and Mrs. P. Maxwells Blue Errafd, when" that Errard gelding flipped him at the gate. Blue Errard ultimately finished second in th,e race to William Alexanders Gypsy Blood with jockey D Tobin in the saddle. Little was astride M. Baker and J. Pryors Gemi-twin when unseated at the gate. Jockey G. P. Ryan substituted for Little on this mount but was unable to get the long shot in the betting home. Dr. Hill, the track physican announced following an early examination that he would X-ray Knisleys ankle but Little was not injured. Along with Dr. Hills other duties as the track physician fiere this afternoon he announced the treatment of 17 heat cases prior to the running of the fourth race. Mrs. R. Buirleys Ziggity became the first four-time winner of the meeting in todays fifth race. The Warlock gelding was actually turning in his fifth consecutive victory of the year and today chalked up another when completing six-furlongs "in 1:10, also giving him the distinction of having run the fastest six furlongs of the meeting. Favored in the betting Ziggity rewarded i his host of supporters "with a .20, .20 l and .40 across the board mutuel.
