Arthur S. in Game Victory Over Past Tense at Salem By JOE HIRSCH ROCKINGHAM PARK, Salem, N. H., June 26. Irving Gushens Arthur S. gave a courageous exhibition through the final furlong to snatch a nose victory from Dover Stables Past Tense in the featured Dover Handicap today. The three-year-old son of Alsab stood off a gallant bid from the runner-up in a manner befitting a champion and rewarded those among the 13,522 in attendance that made him the favorite with a return of .20. Ornum finished five lengths behind Past Tense in: the show slot. The victory was the third in seven starts this season for the consistent Arthur S., who earned 3,550 as a juvenile in 1953 for his owner, the national president of "the HBPA and a noted New England horseman. The winner recorded two successive triumphs at Suffolk Downs before his last start herev at Rockingham, earlier this month. On that occasion he finished fourth after swerving and pulling up, but there was no untoward incident today as Arthur S covered the mile and a sixteenth in a brisk 1:55.
