Determine in Sensational Mile Trial at Hollywood Derby Winner Caught Distance in 1:36 in Move Between Races HOLLYWOOD PARE, Inglewood, Calif., June 26. The biggest "ham" on the Hollywood Park backstretch is Andy Crevolins Determine. The Kentucky Derby winner Determine is reluctant to show his speed in morning trials when the stands are-empty, but give him an admiring audience and the. little gray son of Alibhai puts on a show. Knowing the colts "ego-centricity," trainer Willie Molter has taken to giving him his important speed trials between races. Friday afternoon Molter wanted to give Determine a good mile work in preparation for the 0,000 Westerner on July 3, so he paraded him before the crowd. Hearing the hand-clapping, Determine pricked up his ears and proceeded to turn in one of the most spectacular workouts in Hollywood Park history, churning a mile under a hold in 1:36 from a standing start. This is but a second of f the track record of 1:35 and but a fifth off the fastest mile time of the meeting, 1:35 by Curragh King in winning the Argonaut Handicap. The clocking brigade classified the trial as "handily." With Ray York, his regular rider up, Determine reeled off fractions of :22, :46, 1:10, 1:23. He was not urged at any stage of the proceedings, his perfect stride v devouring the ground without any hint of effort. His task was accomplished so easily the time was surprising. Molter expressed himself as well pleased, which is more than the trainers of other Westerner candidates could say. That three-year-old mile and a quarter stake appears at Determines mercy with the only plausible threat coming from Calumets striking filly Miz Clementine and "taking" Determine is expecting too much, even of a rare one like her.
