The Cleveland Browns professional football team today announced that Lou Groza, the place-kicking specialist, and Horace Gillom have signed their 1954 contracts. Groza, one of the outstanding offensive linemen in professional football, is one of the five original members of coach Paul Browns team to return for a ninth season. Gillom Is starting his eighth year in pro football. He is a punter. Groza enjoyed one of his best seasons last fall as he scored on a record 23 of 26 field goal attempts and converted 39 of 40 point after touchdown kicks. He missed the National Professional football league scoring title by six points, losing to Gordy Soltau of San Francisco. The 23 field goals was a National league record, one of several Groza figured in last season. The field goals boosted his four-year-league total to 65, beating Bob Water-fields record of 60. Grozas string of consecutive points after touchdown reached 109 before he missed in the second game against the Chicago Cardinals last year. He also set the mark for scoring in consecutive games, having scored in 45 in a row. This broke the mark set by Don Hutson of Green Bay, who scored in 41 consecutive games in the 1941 to 1944 seasons.
