Parlo Gives Foxcatcher Delaware Oaks Triumph Whips Open Sesame in Big Upset While Cherokee Rose Is Seventh By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 26. Parlo, three-year-old daughter of Heliopolis Fairy Palace, carried the sapphire blue and gold silks of William duPonts Foxcatcher Farm to an upset victory in. the sixteenth and richest Delaware Oaks here this afternoon. In second position came Walter M. Jeffords Open Sesame, whose belated charge failed by just three-quarters of a length. Philip Godfreys OAlison was five lengths farther back in third position while the favored Cain Hoy coupling of Devils Delight and Cherokee Rose finished seventh and twelfth, respectively, uT the field of 13 three-year-old fillies. The victory was the second important one of the meeting for the Foxcatcher establishment, Chevation having scored impressively in the Kent Stakes, and was the first of the year for Parlo. Her mile and a furlong spin in 1:51 over a track which was termed fast, though showing the effects of an early afternoon shower, earned 6,540 of the 7,625 gross purse. Jack Westrope was astride Parlo and the efforts of the pair brought 5 to their backers in the estimated crowd of 21,500. Parlo, through her sterling effort in the Oaks, may have earned a starting position in the closing day New Castle Handicap, which carries 00,00Q, in added money and is the richest race in the world for fillies and mares. Should she compete, and emerge victorious, she will become the first three-year-old ever to complete the Oaks-New Castle double, though five sophomores Continued on Page Fifty-Two DOUBLE SPEED Arrived with members of the Mrs. John D. Mrs. Marion W. OConnors Busy Nellie was the pacemaker in the Oaks and held sway until the ultimate winner took over passing the half-mile pole. Even then, j Busy Nellie refused to give up and retained the runner-up position until nearing the homelane. Open Sesame, in the meantime, had moved from twelfth at the six-furlong pole to fourth position on the final bend. Parlo drew clear with a quarter of a mile to go, as Westrope, realizing the potentialities of Open Sesame, endeavored to steal away from the field with the Fox-catcher miss. Busy Nellie shortened stride through the final furlong," as Devils Delight, after having loomed a threat, also weakened. Open Sesames closing surge continued right down to the wire, but Parlo showed extreme tenacity to cling to the advantage to the very end. The rush of the Jeffords miss sent her well clear of the others, as OAlison had her hands full to narrowly beat the persistent Busy Nellie. The big disappointment of the race, quite naturally, was Cherokee Rose, generally conceded to be the better of Capt. Harry Guggenheims coupling. She broke tenth in the Bulky field and was never any, closer than that during the nine-furlong trip. Devils Delight raced well until the furlong pole and tired, understandable in view of the fact that she was making only her second start of the year, having won earlier in the week at the six-furlong distance. Mrs. Zelda Cohens War Age became a triple winner in as many local appearances when he won the six -furlong fourth race in 1:11 under Nick Shuk.
