, . . ; . Shady Tune Closes With Rush For Upset Molly Pitcher Victory Miss Joanne Finishes Next To Carolyn K Stable Filly As Monmouth Choices Fait By FRED GALIANI MONMOUTH PARK, Oceanport, N. J?, June 26. Shady Tune proved to be a sad song for most of the crowd of 23,898 here this extremely humid afternoon as she raced to startling upset victory in the ninth running of the Molly Pitcher Handicap. 1 Closing with a rush on the outside, the Carolyn K Stables filly came to the finish three-quarters of a length before J. M. ! Grieves Miss Joanne. W. M. Wickhams Winning Stride, who had the lead in the stretch, was a similar margin back in third place. Shady Tune lit up the tote board with a 8.80, 8" and .20 pay-off after her victorious journey. She was ridden by apprentice Walter Blum, who was scoring his second victory of the afternoon, and the pair covered the mile and a sixteenth in 1:44 over the fast track, just three-fifths off the track record. Shady Tune was one of the lightweights of the field, getting in with 106 pounds, one of which was overweight. J. S. Phipps Spinning Top was the favorite and finished fourth with under 112 pounds, while Darby Dan Farms Atalanta, the topweight with 124 who was prominent in the early part of the race, wound up fifth. 9,900 to Winner Victory in the Molly Pitcher earned Carolyn K Stables owners 9,900 of the gross value of 8,950. Trophies accompanied the victory. Edward Hart, Congressman from New Jersey, presented Carolyn K Stable owner, Irving Kirschbaum and his daughter Joyce, with the Molly Pitcher award, while trainer Nate Byer received a trophy from William De Ewart, Congressman from Montana, and Dwight Rogers, Florida Congressman, presented jockey Blum with his remembrance of the stake victory. Sam Lewin, former partner with Kirschbaum, was also present. , Shady Tune, a four-year-old chestnut daughter of Questionnaire Stolen Melody, bred by the Chaswil Farms, was winning her fourth race in 15 starts this year. She had been successful in allowance races, and in a high-priced claiming affair, but this was her first whirl into the upper social strata. She finished fourth in a prep race early this week to Atalanta. Centenaire and Atalanta went to the front at the start of the Molly Pitcher and battled it out head and head around the first turn and into the backstretch. Going around the turn, Winning Stride, JPaga-la and Granule were in close quarters as the field was well bunched. Atalanta and Centenaire see-sawed for a short time going down the far lane, until eventually the latter called it a day. Win- IRVING KIRSCHBAUM His Carolyn K Stables Shady Tune won the ninth Molly Pitcher Handicap running. j ningr Stride moved up to be third while Spinning Top and Miss Joanne were far back, in fast the latter was last. Winning Stride made her bid as they neared the far turn, moving up to yoke Atalanta as the pair went around the bend. Shady Tune, who had been on the outside, also surged into prominence, while Miss Joanne, attempting to go between horses, had to take up sharply. Winning Stride cornered Atalanta at the head of the serttch, took over the lead as Atalanta dropped back. But Shady Tune was gunning right on the outside, and both Spinning Top and Miss Joanne needled their way through on the inside to become factors. Miss Joanne, farther off from the rail than Spinning Top, held that rival in as she went after Winning Stride but Shady Tune was devouring ground on the outside. The latter soon swept passed Winning Stride as Miss Joanne lunged on the inside. The former got to the wire first as Miss Joanne overran Winning Stride for second money. Spinning Top, finally getting out of the pocket on the rail,, took fourth over the tiring Atalanta.
