J. W. Y. Martin, 44, Dies At His Maryland Home Active in State Hunt Circles; Ran Big Cup Race on His Estate BALTIMORE, Md., June 26. Funeral services were held here this afternoon for John William Young Martin, prominent Maryland sportsman who died at his Worthington Valley estate yesterday. Martin, 44, had been ill for several years with heart trouble. Burial -was in the cemetery of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Garrison, Md. Martin was active in Maryland horse circles. He bred and raised horses, rode to hounds and played in polo matches. The Maryland Hunt Cup race was held on his Baltimore County estate annually. Among the thoroughbreds he owned were Inshore, who won the Grand National point-to-point timber race three times, and Battle Jack, winner of the Baltimore Spring Handicap at Pimlico in 1936. Martin was the son of the late Samuel K. Martin, a Chicago business man who owned real estate in the Loop. He came to Maryland in the 1920.s. He married the former Nancy Lee Byers of Sewickley, Pa., in December 1937. In addition to his wife, other survivors include - four children, Carol Lee, Alexander, Peter and John William Young, Jr.
