Wolf Gal Beats Best Air In Imp Handicap Sprint Hamar Filly Gets Excellent Ride By Donal Bowcut at ThistleDown By RONALD KRANCER Staff Correspondent THISTLEDOWN, North Randall, Ohio, June 26. Perfect weather conditions prevailed here in Northern Ohio this afternoon and a fine crowd of 11,328 turned out to witness the nine-race program here at ThistleDown. The featured event was the second running of the ,820 Imp Handicap at six furlongs for fillies and mares and a bulky field of 12 went to the post. Folf Gal, sporting the silks of Cleve-lander M. R. "Buddy" Hamar, saving ground throughout, was along to gain a length and a half decision over Mrs. Lawrence Frys Best Air. Mrs. Mary Hunters Cajole was thirdanother neck back at the wire. The latter was the choice and ran as part of an entry with Pinelet who was last. Jockey Donal Bowcut rode an excellent race aboard the three-year-old daughter of Samuri who was winning for the third time this season and scoring her first stakes tally of the year. Last year she won several added money events while at Hialeah Park. Mrs. Dan Hanna, one of the social leaders in this area, was in the winners enclosure to present Hamar with a trophy. The victory in the Imp was worth ,315 to Hamar who is one of the leading stockholders in ThistleDown. Wolf Gal was timed in a splendid 1:11 and paid 1.00 as the third choice in the wagering. The Imp was a thrilling contest as all Continued on Page Seven : Wolf Gal Prevails In Imp Handicap Bowcuts Strong Ride Lands Speedy Hamar Filly Clear Of Best Air at ThistleDown Continued from Page One of Burtons handicaps have been this season. Midway along the backstretch any member of the 12-horse field could have gone on to win. A blanket could have been thrown over the field at that stage of the race. Best Air gained a short lead as the field straightened away for the long run down the backstretch with Cajole in second position and Wolf Gal along the rail in third spot another head off the lead. Task Fleet was between horses fourth and Pashpie was in fifth position. With Bowcut riding a very strong race through the final sixteenth of a mile Wolf Gal overtook the pace and went into the lead. From that stage of the race on there was little doubt as to the outcome of the winner. Best Air responding to Wards urging saved second money and Cajole wound up a tiring third. Slippy, who was shipped, here from Detroit for the race, closed willingly to gain the fourth share of the purse. Task Fleet, another Motor City invader, tired and finished fifth. Trainer Angner made a wise choice when he changed riders for his filly. In Wolf Gals previous races here at ThistleDown Freddy Ryan had been doing the riding, but yesterday it was decided that the more experienced Bowcut would fare -better on the filly. He rode her to perfection making his move at the exact right time and saving every inch of ground. Shut Off in Last In her last race the Moses Cleaveland Handicap against older horses of both sexes, she was making a good move when she was shut-off badly and lost all chance. C. H. Everitts , Little Imp, given an excellent ride by the veteran, Paul A. Ward, scored a smashing five-length tally over Royal Manie Stables Whiffenpcof in the Musicarnival Mile. The Leslie Jane Stables Shamrock was a fast closing third, another length back and a neck before Norman Scavas Mr. Skip who ran as part of an entry with Blenmint. In winning Little Imp set a new trackrecord of 1:37 for a mile and paid .20 as the favorite. Little Imp was making his third start of the meeting and was winning for the second time. His only defeat was to Blue Shore when he lost by a nose but since then he has avenged that score. He is one of the leading candidates for the ThistleDown Cup to be run here on July 17. The Musicarnival developed into a two-horse race soon after the start with Whif-fenpoof and Little Imp going out and setting a scorching pace. The first quarter was run in :23, and the half mile in :47 flat. At the half mile call, Little Imp was showing in front by a head with Whiffenpoof second and Shag Tails third, three and a half lengths farther back. Blenmint was now a weary fourth and Pick and Play was fifth. Bears Out in Run to Wire Little Imp started to draw clear after three-quarters which was run in 1:11. At that stage of the race he was in front by a length with Whiffenpoof still second and Shag Tails another two lengths back in third position. Mr. Skip and Shamrock were beginning to make their moves while on the outside of horses. Turning for home Little Imp bore out slightly, but it hardly was enough to bother Whiffenpoof who was now a length and a half in arrears. Shag Tails was still third and Mr. Skip on the extreme outside was in fourth position. Little Imp while being mildly urged by Ward drew clear throug: the final sixteenth of a mile and it was just a -question of how far the good-looking Seven Hearts gelding would win by. Whiffenpoof was successful in holding second money over Shamrock and Mr. Skip. Little Imp was making his ninth appearance of the season and was winning for the second time. His earnings are now well over ,000. Moore and Renaws Daddys Dog, nicely ridden by Roberto Gonzalez, scored by two and one-half lengths over the favored Miss Zenith in the fifth race at a mile and one-sixteenth. Third under the wire was Jac-cone, another three lengths back. The winning daughter of War Dog Blini paid 0.80 and was timed in 1:46 flat. Jaccone and the ultimate winner raced as a team on the trip along the backstretch and, approaching the far turn, Miss Zenith, ridden by Louis Syf rig, moved along on the inside to join the pace setters." Those three battled it out heads apart on the far turn and, then entering the stretch, Jaccone started to shorten stride, andat the furlong mark it appeared as though Miss Zenith and Daddys Dog would stage a "ding-dong" finish. It did not develop that way, however, as Miss Zenith faltered badly in the final sixteenth and was no match for the winning filly.
