Rouge Maid Accounts For Woodbines Selene Stakes . Reaches Finish Four Lengths in Advance of Cul de Sac, Rockbrown By RUSS DELUCA Staff Correspondent WOODBINE PARK, Toronto, Ont., June 22. Rouge Maid, carrying the colors of Eric Cradocks North Downs Farm, drove to a, handy victory in the second running of. the Selene Stakes, featured here this afternoon. The daughter of Roi Rouge Min- strel Maid reached the finish four lengths in advance of Parkhill Farms Cul de Sac, the early pacemaker. Con Smythes Rock-brown finished third in the field of 10. Mrs. Russell Grauls Baffin Bay was the disappointing favorite. The temperamental Quebec-bred filly, who had finished second in the Queens Plate, resorted to her bad behaviour in the starting gate. She flipped backward, tossing jockey Dick Buisson and going down herself. The rider was uninjured and remounted. The filly lacked her usual early speed from the start and failed to enter serious contention. Rouge Maid going in her best form, was rated along under mild restraint in the backstretch run. Jockey Dave Stevenson began his move around the outside on the turn and she quickly cut down Cul de Sacs early lead. She opened up a clear lead before reaching the furlong poje and was not threatened to the finish. Cul de Sac, always a rapid beginner, had the speed of her field and opened up a lead of more than two lengths on the turn, but gave way readily when the ultimate winner challenged. She was easily best of the others. Rockbrown, an Irish-bred filly, showed improvement over three previous starts here. Though she was slow from the break, she made. up ground steadily and finished boldly in the final sixteenth. Mrs. E. P. Taylors Festivity and J. E. F. Semrams Teddikins were prominent briefly. The Selene carried a gross value of ,680, and victory was worth ,895 to the North Downs Farm. Brigadier C. S. McKee, a member of the Ontario Racing Commission, made the trophy presentation to owner Cradock.
