Reflections By Nelson Dunstan Two-Year-Olds Now Take Over Spotlight Stake Winners Boost Sires at Auctions Subahdar Faces Tough Task in Edgemere NEW YORK, N. Y., June 22. Although the Great American at Aqueduct on July 6 will be the first six-furlong stake for two-year-olds, the Primer at Arling ton last Monday and the Christiana at Delaware and Tremont at Aqueduct today are a trio that often point out some juveniles of championship potential and, by the same token, others who will soon pass into limbo. In Florida, the best colt was Getthere Jack and one of the best fillies was Queen Margie, winner of the Hialeah Juvenile and Singing Tower Stakes. Naturally, the many events that have been run since have pointed out other juveniles and one is the unbeaten Pollyls Jet. It was this colt who broke the string of Getthere Jack in Belmont Parks Juvenile Stakes. These youngsters have a long way to travel and by the time the Arlington Futurity is run .in July, followed by the Flash, Saratoga Special, Spinaway and Hopeful at Saratoga, along with the Princess Pat and the Prairie State at Washington Park, the picture may be entirely different. In September, the 5,000 Washington Park Futurity will be run, and during the fall events on Long Island there will be forerunners to the Belmont Futurity. In New Jersey, The Garden State and The Gardenia are the big features. By that time, we will have our idea of the juvenile champions. Helioscope Adds to Heliopolis Prestige In the early months of the year, a stake winner can do considerable for his sire when the yearlings go into the ring at Keeneland and Saratoga. Helioscope, who is making a strong bid for the championship of the handicap division, was a 7,000 purchase at Keeneland and is a son of Heliopolis War Flower, by Man o War. Saratoga is also in the picture this year. Get-there JackSvas purchased by John Dordans Lily-Ann Stable from the consignment of Whitney Stones Mor? ven Stud a year ago for ,600. He could be one of the best bargains of the season. We could fill a column with yearlings who were taken from the salesring at Keeneland and Saratoga and who went on to win fortunes for their owners. These early stakes center attention on the yearlings to be sold. Getthere Jack is certain to center attention on colts and fillies by Bimelech who will be sold in July and August. Polynesian should be popular this year for, following Native. Dancer, Pollys Jet came sharply into the 1955 picture. The 0,000 Ohio Derby at ThistleDown is the richest race on the week-end schedule. Its for three-year-olds, while all the stakes at other tracks are for three-year-olds and older horses. Here in New York, the 5,000 Edgemere Handicap at one and one-eighth miles will be the feature, and, with Fisherman, High Gun and Social Outcast declared, Mrs. Walter Jeffords Subahdar has been assigned top weight of 126 pounds. This son of Alsab deserves the distinction. A winner at Laurel and Garden State, he came on to New York to run third to Helioscope and High Gun in the Suburban, nine lengths in front of Mark-Ye-Well. He is asked to give from three to 24 pounds to those who may oppose him and it is our opinion that his stiffest . opposition will be from Straight Face, who gets in with 123 and Joe Jones at 118, although we hasten to add that there are others who could be very much in the running at their weights. Straight Face was not impressive in his two local starts, but he has been working well and should he display anything like his form of a year ago at this time, he will be hard to beat. Last year, he lost a tough decision to Native Dancer in the Metropolitan, but then went on to win the Suburban with 118 pounds from Bassanio and Mandingo, both carrying the feather of 106. Maine Chance Farms fast Jet Action is third on the Edgemere list at 112, with Fabulist at 119 and Chevation at 118. Distaff Racing Takes the Spotlight Fillies and mares are very much in the picture these days and they will be for some weeks to come. Oil Painting was Aqueducts Distaff winner on Monday and this week end the "new" New Castle at Delaware -Park, the second event of the "Distaff Big Three," will be run. There can be only one triple crown, of course, but New York has its own crown with the Metropolitan, Suburban and Brooklyn Handicaps, so has Delaware Park with the Delaware Oaks, "new" New Castle and Delaware Handicap, which, with 10,000 in added money, is now the richest race in the world for fillies and mares. It is much too early to visualize the field that will go to the post in the Delaware Handicap on July 2, but it is safe to say that the finest of the weaker sex will answer the bugle. Eight of the 10 three-year-old fillies that raced in the Delaware Oaks are named for the July event and it is our opinion that High. Voltage will be the one they will all have to beat. That will by no means end the events for fillies and mares, for before July is out the Modesty Handicap at Arlington Park, the Champlain Handicap at Saratoga, and the 0,000 Arlington Matron will be run.
