: , Four New Gastle Candidates Work Gainsboro Girl, Rosemary B, Spinning Top and Smart Devil Display Good Moves By PALMER HEAGERTY Staff Correspondent DELAWARE PARK, Stanton, Del., June 22. Gainsboro Girl, the Bernborough mare who last season picked up 01,800 for Richard A. Jenks Shawmut Stable through her victory in the New Castle Handicap, worked a mile in 1:42 handily this morning in preparation for the "new" version of the race The New Castle this season has been changed to ah allowance stakes and cut in distance from a mile and a quarter to a mile and a sixteenth. The former conditions of the race -now belong to the 10,000 added Delaware Handicap final event of the "distaff big three," to be contested a week from Saturday. The work of Gainsboro Girl, while quite satisfactory to trainer Phil Brady, was overshadowed a bit by a trial of similar distance by William L. Huntleys Rosemary B., who broke from the gate and covered the distance in 1:41 handily. Gainsboro Girl and Rosemary B., incidentally, accounted for the past two runnings of Hia-leahs Black Helen Handicap. Spinning Top Goes Six Furlongs Still another candidate for the New Castle to see action during the morning was John S. Phipps Spinning Top. The Bull Lea Whirlabout five-year-old was sent six furlongs and came through splendidly with time of 1:13, best time of the morning for the distance. The three-year-old Smart Devil, who set the pace in last weeks Delaware Oaks, in which her stable companion, Hen Party, missed by just a neck to overcome High Voltage, turned in a sharp five-furlong move. After stepping the opening half in :48, she threw in a final panel of :11 to complete the trip in a minute flat. Latest members of the distaff to join the list of probable New Castle starters were Edward P. Taylors Canadiana, Mrs. George D. Wideners Evening Out, Darby Dan Farms Clear Dawn and Elmendorfs Carry the News. Evening Out was the winner of Monmouth Parks Regret last weekend, while Clear Dawn was among the also-rans. Canadiana, whose early season form was dull, showed a return to form in her last when third in the Distaff Handicap. Other probable starters at this time include: Walter J. Appels Another World; Bohemia Stables Maid of Flight; George A. Cavanaughs Blue Violin; Companas Stables Ros Clag; Marc Goldnamers Royal Fan; Happy Hill Farms June Fete; Walter M. Jeffords Open Sesame; Ada L. Rices Cerise Reine and Mrs. Ben F. Whitakers Grecian Queen.
