Mrs. Mrs. Mark Mark Accounts Accounts For For Cleopatra; Cleopatra; Helioscope Helioscope Outruns Outruns Salvator Salvator Rival Rival In Reserve Second At Arlington Park Scurlock Handles Greenacre Filly FivePoundsOverweight; Nimble Doll Third Past Wire By HUGH J. McGUIRE ARLINGTON PARK, Arlington Heights, 111., June 22. Covering the one mile of the Cleopatra Handicap for three-year-old fillies here this afternoon in 1:35, the fastest time recorded in this area this sea-, son,, Greenacres Stock Farms Mrs. Mark .was ridden out at the end of the test to take top honors by a length and a quarter over the stout choice, In Reserve, from the Alberta Ranches, Ltd. Third in the abbreviated field of six came Mrs. Ada L. Rices Nimble Doll, who was an additional length and a half away. The winner was ridden by Don Scurlock and was originally the lightweight of the field under 103 pounds, but Scurlock was five pounds overweight. In Reserve Favorite An excellent midweek crowd of 14,315 installed In Reserve a 4-to-5 choice, while the winner was the longest priced contestant with the exception of Countess Anita. Fractional times for the race were :22, :45, 1:09, while the final time was just a full second slower than the track record. After the race Jockey Scurlock, the rider of Mrs. Mayk, had this to say: "I didnt want to take the lead as early as I did, but this mare wanted to run and I let her. She was running easily until the last eighth where she tired, but I, still knew we had it." In Reserve was top weight of the field under 119 pounds and, after the race, her Continued on Page Twenty-Nine Mrs. Mark Accounts For Cleopatra at Arlington Greenacre Farm Filly Dashes Past Wire in Clear Before In Reserve Continued from Page One rider and breeder Johnny Longden reported: "I think we were beaten by the shift in weights. We have no other excuse. I had dead aim on the leader coming into the stretch, but just couldnt make it." Meanwhile, Longden was nursing In Reserve back of the pace and had her well in hand when she moved into third place going to the far turn. Around the elbow In Reserve saved ground as she hugged the rail and in the home lane she displaced Nimble Doll from the runner-up post without difficulty and was asked for speed to reach the leader, who had established a three-length advantage. In Reserve wasj able to reduce the margin of Mrs. Mark as she inched ahead, but the Greenacres Miss had enough left to remove the final issue from doubt. Hasty House Farms Miss Energy was fourth, unable to better that position at any time except s s immediately after the start, while he only other two starters, Countess Anita and Mazza, did not seriously enter the picture at any time. Mrs. Mark was fresh from a spring score at the Balmoral meet, and by her -tally the daughter of Brookfield Sarah Loraine earned 2,500 of the gross purse of 1,-725 in her first stakes victory of the year. It was Nimble Doll who showed the most early speed from a good start as she took a short lead oveu the eventual winner, but this was under sufferance from Mrs. Mark, who was well in hand and who went -to the front along the backstretch when Scurlock decided not to restrain her too greatly. Nimble Doll raced along with Mrs. Mark and Willie Hartack, who rode her, reported that he had a snug hold of her, but when the winner opened up at the three-eighths pole, his charge did not respond. Arab Actress, one of the outstanding fillies of Chicago racing a couple of .years ago, staged a fine comeback when she registered an impressive score in the Evergold Purse, the days secondary feature. Dave Erb had Arab Actress close up from the start and she slipped through an opening on the inside in the stretch to win going away from Pursuance and Nirgal Lad, who raced to a dead heat for second place. Arab Actress was the favorite in the five-and-a-half -furlong grass event. Hasty House Farms Alspal was withdrawn from the featured Cleopatra Handicap to start in the fifth event, and she made good as the favorite under a splendidly judged ride by Johnny Adams. Alspal went to the front soon after the start and never got far away from the outsider, Teisler, whom she defeated by a half length. The distance was six furlongs. Another mare to stage a return to good form was Calumets five-year-old Bubbley, who won the fourth race. Bubbley, showing some of her old-time dash in the stretch, moved to the front of the field on the outside in the last sixteenth, and bested Centenaire, with Beanir, the favorite, who had made the pace, being fourth. Bubbley was. ridden by Willie Har- tack for that boys second score of the afternoon. Hartacks other successful mount came in the opening race aboard Witch Way, the favorite, who was in front most of the way. Witch Way, coupled with Arete the second winner, combined for a Daily Double of 6.40.
