JOHNSTOWNS WITHERS WORK Derby Winner Displays Good Form in Mile Gallop in 1:38% — Gilded Knight Also Fit. NEW YORK, N. T., May 22.— Johnstown indicated his readiness for Saturdays running of the Withers Stakes at Belmont Park by turning in a brilliant mile trial over the Aqueduct course this morning. William Woodwards Kentucky Derby, Wood Memorial and Paumonok Handicap winner did the eight furlongs, the .Withers distance, in 1:38% handily and trainer James Fitzsim-mons was satisfied the colt had lost none of his speed in his Preakness engagement. Fitzsimmons also was satisfied with the manner in which Gilded Knight worked for the Withers this morning, the Wheatley Stables colt doing the mile in 1:40, breezing. Johnstown was timed the first half mile in :49%, the three-quarters in 1:14% and the seven furlongs in 1:26, so it is seen he required only :48% for the final half mile. While Gilded Knights pace was slower, he finished in an easier manner. OTHER WORKOUTS. Other Withers candidates given trials were: El Chico and Hash, the former doing six furlongs in 1:13% Sunday and the Green-tree colt a mile yesterday in 1-A24and, handily. Whisperer stepped three-quarters in 1:14%, but he is a doubtful starter, as is Heather Broom, another John Hay Whitney eligible which is being pointed for the Belmont Stakes. Heather Broom is due to run today in the Equipoise Handicap at a mile and an eighth. Knickerbocker gained Withers consideration after his score in the Metropolitan Handicap, while other possibilities include T. M. Dorsett, Lovely Night, Entracte, Birch Rod, Charlotte Girl and.Skyflier. The Juvenile Stakes, companion feature to the Withers, promises to bring together most of the better two-year-olds seen in the East this spring and the field for the five furlongs straightaway dash may include Gannet, Perida, Now What, Cockerel, Bashful Duck, Wise Bee, Rumba Gus, Parasang, Woof Woof, Merry Knight and Wake Robin.
