* • • ■ -t Here and There on the Turf Knickerbocker Shows Class Stewards Disqualify Ariel Toy Now What and Gannet to Clash Tatterdemalion Must Rest * 1 Particularly on New York tracks, anything can happen if the occasion happens to be important — such as the Metropolitan Handicap running Saturday. That historic mile race was won by Knickerbocker at * odds ranging from 60 down to 40 to 1, therefore, the result was quite unexpected even though the Joseph E. Widener three-year-old had won his two previous starts. As the Metropolitan was run, the son of Teddy— Warrior Lass, by Man o War, was distinctly best of the eight contestants, but he appears to Have committed the same kind of a foul for which Ariel Toy was disqualified in the preceding race. Knickerbocker had He Did in very close quarters in the stretch run and the latter finally was squeezed back in the final sixteenth to finish fourth. He Did might have held on for secondary honors but for his lack of racing room. Knickerbocker, nevertheless, displayed a fine performance, much better than his other j effort .this spring and his lone two-year-old outing, and trainer Peter Coyne may be expected to send him out for the Withers I Stakes Saturday. The Widener colt carried only 100 pounds, but he covered the mile in the creditable time of 1:37% and succeeded] in defeating several very capable older horses, chief of which were Jacola and Fighting Fox. Edward Friendlys filly wasnt quite as sharp as she might have been but for competing in the Dixie Handicap at a mile and three-sixteenths ten days previous, because she wasnt able to bear down as sharply in the final quarter as was necessary to overtake the easy-running Knickerbocker. Fighting Fox just wasnt good enough to overcome slight interference at the far turn and weakened towards the finish. Ariel Toy was the victim of his second disqualification. Last summer at Saratoga he was szt back after winning the Albany Handicap, being held at fault for the jam at the half-mile ground that resulted in Thingumabobs fatal accident. In his race Saturday, Ariel Toy made a bold run through the stretch well out from the inner rail. A sixteenth out Entracte was trying to get by Spillway as the latter was bearing out but-Ariel Toy passed them in a hurry. Entractes rider claimed a foul against the Hugh Jackson colt and it was allowed. Spillway also was set back for his part in the situation. Some doubt existed as to Ariel Toys guilt for the official action taken against him. Now What, the best two-year-old to be shown by Alfred Vanderbilt for a couple of years, lived up to the promise she had revealed in the Pimlico Nursery Stakes in her clash with fourteen other maiden fillies Saturday. The daughter of Chance Play and Thats That, by High Time was a good second to Cockerel in the Pimlico Nursery although it was her first start. She might have been lacking condition as she tired -Continued on seventh page. j HERE AND THERE ON THE TURF Continued from second page. towards the end after setting the early Tjace. In her second start, Now What led most of the way and drew out towards the end. She is certain to be one of the favorites in the Juvenile Stakes this coming week-end when she will encounter the fleet Gannet which appcai-s to be the best youngster seen on the Metropolitan circuit so far this season. The son of Okapi and Willet, by Dunlin, simply toyed with Cockerel, more so perhaps than the ten-pound pull in the weights he enjoyed over the Pimlico Nursery victor. Thomas J. Hcalcy should be chastizing himself for not nominating Tatterdemalion for the Suburban Handicap, considering the splendid form of the six-year-old gelded son of St. Germans and Elf, by Chicle, this spring. The half-brother to Boojum displayed a smart effort in finishing second in the Dixie after encountering early trouble and being compelled to weave his way through the field and he came back with another high class performance to account for the Governors Handicap at Suffolk Downs Saturday. Although last leaving the back stretch, Tatterdemalion had sufficient closing Hpccd to overtake his opponents in time to draw out to a clean cut victory although the distance was only a mile. Not being an eligible lo the Suburban, Tatterdemalion may havo to mark time for a while before his next engagement.
