STRIKE IN BRIGGS PLANTS DETROIT, Mich., May 22.— The C. I. O. called a strike of 18,000 Briggs Mfg. Co. workers today, forcing seven Briggs plants in Detroit to shut down. The strike went into effect automatically as the company let pass the deadline set by the auto workers union for acceptance of union demands in a new contract. The strike, if continued, will affect production at many Chrysler Corporation plants and will hamper Ford Motor Company production. C. I. O. shop stewards and members put the strike into effect as soon as the deadline passed. They were authorized to strike by a vote of the local and were prepared for direct, fast action to stop production. The strike is the first major labor difficulty since the United Automobile Workers Union was split into two unions, I C. L O. and anti-C. I. O., last January. * J ]
