BEACH ENSEMBLE A REPEATER Revels in the Sloppy Going for Easy Score at Suffolk Downs. Jockey K. McCombs Displays Riding Ability in Winning Nose Decisions Astride Palo Duro and Puzzle Dance. BOSTON, Mass., May 22.— Reveling in the sloppy going and drawing away from her company in the stretch, B. A. Darios Beach Ensemble defeated a small though select band of fillies in the Marlborough Purse, feature of todays card at Suffolk Downs. Eddie Robart was astride the winner. Her winning margin at the end was two and a half lengths over the odds-on favorite, Be Blue. The latter staved off the late rush of Stage Beauty by a nose to take the place. Harp Weaver, the only other entrant, was never in the running. Beach Ensemble went postward the second choice, as Be Blue commanded the bulk of support following recent excellent efforts in handicaps and stakes. After a minutes delay at the barrier, the field was off to an excellent start, with Beach Ensemble outbreaking Be Blue. Down the back stretch the Dario colorbearer held only a neck advantage and it seemed that Be Blue, under snug restraint, might take the lead at her riders pleasure. On the turn those who supported the choice began to anticipate trouble. J. G. Wilson, astride Be Blue, had gone to the whip, but his mount could not cut down the leaders margin. SLOPPY GOING. Turning for home it was Beach Ensemble by a length and a half as the favorite began to shorten stride in the sloppy going. It was only after a vigorous ride through the stretch that Wilson was able to bring the tiring Heard horse into place money by the slimmest of margins. By her victory today Beach Ensemble gave notice that she will be hard to down in subsequent races and may prove a handicap star of note during the New England season. Be Blues effort merely proved that she does not fancy mud, and that a fast track will find her giving a better account of herself. Despite the sloppy going and intermittent rainfall throughout the afternoon, providing the most disagreeable conditions of the meeting to date, a large crowd was present and the mutuel play was spirited. BEATS FARRAGO. One of the closest finishes of the meeting attended the fifth race, another dash of three-quarters mile when Puzzle Dance got up in the last stride to down Farrago. Flam-ing Petee was third in the field of seven better than average maiden performers. I Farrago had the early speed, cutting out all the pace. Leaving the back stretch the Caruso colt increased his advantage to a couple of lengths. It was Puzzle Dance that followed in closest attendance of the leader and Housework was heading the others. Coming into the stretch Farrago still had daylight showing over Puzzle Dance. Inside the last sixteenth Farrago began to shorten strides, but it did not seem possible that he would be overtaken. McCombs was working with whip and heel on Puzzle Dance and was cutting down the margin that separated her from the winner with every stride. Right at the end Puzzle Dance, on the outside, was up to earn top honors. The duel of the leaders had carried them four lengths out | in front of Flaming Petee. , The score of Puzzle Dance afforded jockey , K. McCombs the opportunity of chalking up ,a double for the afternoon, having previously scored in another nose finish astride Palo Duro in the third event.
