Jumbo Jumbo Outruns Outruns Battlefield Battlefield in in Swift; Swift; Bernwood Bernwood Speeds Speeds to to Downs Downs Victory Victory Leads Fleeterthan ♦ By Length and Half Royally-Bred Combs Colt Sets New Track Mark of 1 :10 for Three-Quarters By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent CHURCHILL DOWNS, Louisville, Ky., May 16. — Brownell Combs Bernwood, who gave a splendid performance in the recently-decided Derby Trial, streaked to a popular victory here today in the Zev Purse, establishing a new six-furlong track record in 1:10. Hustled hard through the stretch by Tommy Barrow, the Combs homebred colt beat Brown Hotel Stables Fleeterthan a length and one-half while William E. Schmidts Holly Sweet earned the short end of the spoils three-quarters [ of a length back. Only six three-year-olds i met in the Zev, Walmac Farms Adams Off Ox, Tom Grays Robust, and Mrs. E. Johnstons Sale Price followed the placed trio home in that order. Bernwood, a well-made son of Bernbor-ough and Miss Dogwood, carried high weight of 117 pounds under the conditions of the Zev as he clipped one-fifth of a second off Porters Brooms old three-quarter-mile 1 mark. The Combs colt was | the odds -on choice in the totalisator for the Zev at 1 to 2. Field Off Well Starter Carl Burns sent the small Zev field away from the gate in a perfect I "line break," Bernwood showing in front j after a sixteenth mile while Robust and Holly Sweet also were forwardly placed 1 and very much in the picture. Going into 1 the upper turn, Robust took a half-length lead over Holly Sweet and Barrow was ; forced to ease Bernwood back a bit as the ultimate victor ran into rather tight quarters. Approaching the stretch, Holly Sweet put Robust away and Bernwood began what was to be a winning bid from third ; and on the outside. Fleeterthan also made her move with Bernwood and it was apparent that the two would battle it out as the others showed signs of having had enough. Holly 7 Sweet had a six-length advantage on l Adams Off Ox for the show. Clear skies, pleasant temperatures and a x lightning fast track made it a most delightful afternoon to go racing and the mid-week program drew a crowd of ap-• proximately 8,500 spectators. The gather - ing was treated to exciting formful sport f and wagering, which has shown an in-■ crease over that of the 1950 spring meet, continued on an upward trend. Jockey Doug Dodson rode his third successful mount of the afternoon, piloting Circle M Farms Foxey Lad to a length and one-half decision in The Darb Purse. The p winner, a handsome black son of Fighting Fox and Roselake, reached the end of the e mile with a length and one-half advantage e over his nearest rival, H. B. Peatlings I Luckey Pete. Mrs. Frederick Sharpes 6 Kings Hope, who fashioned a quick pace e for three-quarters mile of the Darb, ran 1 third, a length off Luckey Pete and a half I length before Henry Forrests favored Good i Question, fourth in the band of six sopho-I - more starters. Foxey Lad, who won in Florida early this S year, was no better than third choice in n the betting and paid .80 after completing I his trip in a commendable 1;364. Miss Break, a homebred daughter of * Unbreakable and Appian Via, carried the silks of P. A. B. Widener III. to a well- deserved verdict in the four and one -half f furlongs Pennant Purse, which matched a half-dozen juveniles at four and one-half f furlongs. Miss Break, hustled along by y v Douglas Dodson, sped to the wire with a a two-length margin over Swell Dish, a a member of the Mrs. Frederick Sharpe and 3 Ray Mullen, Jr., Stable. Three and one- ~ half lengths back, Brown Hotel Stables Old Fiddle lasted for third, a head before e W. T. Bradleys favored Hill Count. The Widener miss stepped the distance e in :52%, only two-fifths off the track rec-e - ord. Miss Break returned better than 3 to 1. Jockey Dodson rounded out a saddle e double with Miss Break, having scored in the previous race with Baylor O. Hick-d mans Desert Witch.
