MURPHY Staff Correspondent WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, 111., May 16. — Although the horses who participated in the sixth and best race at Lin-coln-at-Washington today may never set the turf world afire, they nevertheless provided the most interesting contest of the afternoon with the first four being closely aligned at the end. Well Worth It, owned by W. M. Wickham and trained by ex-jockey Tommy. Root, was the winner, with Pensive Lady second; Inky Racer, third, and Open Way, fourth. It was a surprise victory as Well Worth It paid 3.20. The filly was ridden by Johnny Adams for that saddle-mites first success of the Chicago season. It was the third triumph in four starts for Well Worth It, a winner at Gulf-; stream Park and Keeneland. Brown Smoke, in from the New Orleans Fair Grounds, where he had made five futile attempts since the first of the year, was installed a warm choice in the field of seven, with Open Way, from Sportsmans Park, second in favor. Contestants Closely Bunched The race started out as if it would be a torrid contest. Only about two lengths separated the first and last horse after they had raced a furlong. They straightened " out for home with Pensive Lady a head in front, and it was "dog eat dog" right to the wire, with the winning margin i being a nose. Inky Racer was beaten a a like distance by Pensive Lady and was a a head in advance of Open Way. The latter r was a dozen lengths before the others. Todays attendance showed an increase e over that of opening day, 8,605" being present. - The track was fast and the weather r humid and just a trifle hazy. The three-year-old, Tiger Harris, who o was deemed good enough to be nominated 3 for the Kentucky Derby, was overlooked in i the fourth race and galloped to an easy y victory to pay 1.00. The son of Tiger, % who had been sent to Churchill Downs s from Sportmans Park and make an unsuccessful - start in a maiden race, was s easily best of the field of non-winners and i led most of the way to win by seven lengths s with jockey Paul Bailey in the saddle. The colt is owned by Herman Bryant, Jr., of f New York, and was making the third start t of his career. Hush Money and Good Hostess, a couple e of racers from Sportsmans Park, formed a combination to make an 6.60 Daily y Double. Hush Money, who had been twice second at the half-mile oval, beat out the favored Rey El Cone jo, while Good Hostess s made it two straight triumphs in trimming y Genies Mate. Happy West, who was favored, had some early foot, but faded. Apprentice Al Widman and the veteran Tony | Skoronski were the winning riders. Gessy B., another Cicero runner, made good in the third offering when, with apprentice I C. C. Smith up, she defeated Night t Fire, with the favored Henny Penny third. For a time during the running of the " a fifth race, it seemed as if Ben Fogelson, owner of Good Hostess, might score a double " for the day, but his colorbearer, Eternal ■ Flirt, failed when she needed it most. She - bore out badly while leading in the stretch and Blue Agent, dropping down slightly in l class, saved ground to get the money, with l Smart Eve reaching second place. Eternal Flirt got a dead-heat with the favored 1 Kandycal for third place. Kandycal was S in early difficulty or would have been ! closer.
