May 16. — Leading her more heavily burdened rivals a swift journey, H. W. Fin-chers Danger Ahead shouldered a feathery 104 pouncjs and gallantly maintained her speed throughout the one mile and a sixteenth of todays featured Brigantine Purse to eke out a neck victory over Woodland Farms Picture Card. The latter, making his first start over a distance of ground this season, carried a nominal 109 pounds and occasionally slipped his head in front of the winner while lodging a continuous challenge, but tired and drifted wide the crucial stages. Although Picture Card was "straight-legged" arriving at the finish, he was distant six lengths in front of T. P. Morgans well-regarded Crown Me, who in turn bettered the 11 to 10 favorite, Joe Gaveg-nanos Pensava, by a length and a half. This latter duo were both weighted with 122 pounds. Herbert Lindberg nicely nursed the speed of Finchers mare, who is a five-year-old daughter of Head Play and Lady Beware. She always has been a tough one to beat when she is able to reach the front early, although she has not been able to win race since capturing a similar contest this course last fall. She was the third choice of a crowd of 14,491 turning out for the formful racing and the warmest day the season, and she paid 0.20. Picture Card was obviously short for his effort today, but the others had less obvious excuses. Crown Me simply could not cope with the swift early pace and tired. Pensava, however, appeared to sulk after the first quarter-mile. It may have been caused by his racing on the inside horses, but Fernando Fernandez, his pilot, at no time attempted to bring him to the outside, and he never was a factor. No credit is to be taken away from Danger Ahead, which is to be proven by her excellent time of 1:44.
