Hawthorne Gold Cup Entries Close May 16 5,000 Handicap Is Early Closing Event This Season Lawrence C. Bogenschutz has just returned from a swing of the eastern tracks in the inerests of the 5,000 added Hawthorne Gold Cup, which closes for nominations on May 16. Bogenschutz reports an excellent response among horsemen to the Gold Cup and its increased value which makes it the richest race ever to be decided at the West Side Course. This year the Gold Cups conditions have been changed to make it an early closing affair. Original subscriptions of 00 are due by midnight, May 16. and then there will be a first payment of 50 per nomination on July 1. It will cost 50 to pass the entry box and 50 additional to start. With such fees and the increased added money it is expected the race will gross 00,000. The Gold Cup is under handicap conditions, is for three-year-olds and upward and will be contested over the mile and one-quarter distance on October 17, the closing day of Hawthornes 35-day meeting. The session opons September 8. Bogenschutz is racing secretary -handi-capper at Hawthorne and serves in a similar position for the Lincoln Fields meeting which opens at Hawthorne on May 18.
