Crafty Crafty Admiral Admiral Tops Tops Six Six in in Dixie; Dixie; Jersey Jersey Draws Draws Fourteen Fourteen Sophomores Sophomores Royal Bay Gem Is 1 One of Topweights Has 1 18 With Social Outcast While Giving Hueso, Others Seven at Garden State Park By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 8. — Headed by Eugene Constantin, Jr.s Royal Bay Gem and Alfred G. Vander-bilts Social Outcast, who finished fourth and seventh, respectively, in the seventy-ninth running of the Kentucky Derby, a field of 14 prominent three-year-olds are scheduled to parade postward here tomorrow for the twelfth running of the mile and a furlong, 0,000 added Jersey Stakes. The Jersey, which has been captured in former years by such outstanding sophomores as Citation, Lucky Draw and Palestinian, is unlike the "Triple Crown" events that are contested under scale weights, in that the imposts for this event are set under allowance conditions. Royal Bay Gem and Social Outcast will each shoulder 118 pounds, conceding four pounds to the Jersey Trial winner, Robert P. Levys Hueso, and seven pounds to the remainder. Preakness Two Weeks Away Not only is the local fixture important in its own right, but it is safe to predict that the more successful participants tomorrow will offer their challenge two weeks from Saturday in the Preakness Stakes, and perhaps in the later and culminative point of the "Triple Crown," the Belmont Stakes. Royal Bay Gem, by the imported Royal Gem II. and sharing parenthood on the sires side with the Derby victor, Dark Star, will be ridden by his familiar pilot, Jimmy Combest. He will be a heavy favorite, due not only to his creditable effort in the Kentucky Derby, but from his triumphs in the Chesapeake Stakes at Bowie and the Everglades Stakes last winter at Hia-leah. He has won seven races in a career of 32 starts, and earned an excess of 00,000. Apparently Royal Bay Gem was not quite Continued on Page Forty-Seven Royal Bay Gem in Jersey With Thirteen Opponents Has 118 Pounds, Same Impost as Social Outcast Will Carry Today Continued from Page One up to his reputation as a "stretch runner" against the caliber of his rivals in the Derby as he made up only about a half-length in the final stages. He did pass tiring horses to advance from seventh to fourth in the last furlong, however, and is reported to have lost considerable ground racing on the outside. His best efforts seem to be at the distance of the Jersey, and the weight tomorrow is only a token handicap if he should perform to expectations. Social Outcast, who performed as an entry with the favored Native Dancer in the Derby, was outrun from the beginning of that fixture, the gelded son of Shut Out — Pansy, by Sickle, finished fourth in both the Chesapeake and the Wood Memorial prior to the Derby, and displayed excellent speed in an overnight sprint arriving at Jamaica from Santa Anita to finish a bang-up second to Tahitian King. His total earnings in 18 starts exceeds 0,000, and last year he won seven races, including the Tyro Stakes at Monmouth Park. Hueso, who captured the Cherry Blossom Stakes at Bowie and finished second to Royal Bay Gem in the Chesapeake, is unlike his two top rivals in style of running, preferring to remain with the early pace. The Philadelphia-owned Roman colt was extremely impressive taking a five lengths score in the Jersey Trial here on Tuesday and it is very possible that he has improved enough since the Chesapeake to reverse the decision with Royal Bay Gem. Joe Cul-mone, who rode him in the Trial, will have tomorrows assignment. Not to be overlooked are Brookmeade Stables County Clare or the New England invader, William J. Beatties Park Dandy. The former, a colt by Shannon n. came from a winning sprint at Gulfstream Park to defeat a capable band here at a mile and a sixteenth, while Park Dandy won his last three in succession at Lincoln Downs, including two decisions over older handicap horses.
