HUMPHREY went to the front at once and, permitted to race freely, opened up after going a quarter and was not in danger of being headed, although hustled along to the end. ROMAN VULCAN moved to second place after going half the trip and held it to the end. but was all out to stall off WICHITA LASS. The latter finished with a fair amount of courage. PERFECT SWEEP came out in the stretch and was going well at the end. BILL BOY went in the air at the start and almost unseated his rider, was in close quarters a couple of times during the running and showed a good effort. CLOWN ESS had early speed. SHOTRAL was well placed in the first half mile and, coming to the outside of XALAPA PRIDE in the stretch, wore him down to win drawing out. XALAPA PRIDE went to the front early and set a good pace, then held on fairly well, but was not good enough. VERY SPECIAL had speed and also displayed a fair amount of courage in the stretch. BLUE LICKS was not hard urged in the first half mile but responded readily when called upon to move fast on the outside after leaving the back-stretch, then went very wide on the stretch turn but continued strongly to best MY TIME. The latter was never too far removed and was in rather tight quarters early but came well in the stretch despite losing some ground. CLEAR DAY raced close up on the side of WHITLEATHER in the first half mile, then forged to the front to save ground thereafter. ELEVENPOINT failed to be a serious contender. COUNTESS IN was saved within striking distance of the leaders to the final quarter, then moved up on the outside and, getting to the front at midstretch, drew out slowly near the end. TEST PATTERN alternated with BUGLE CORPS in setting the pace while racing on the outside of the latter and bested him in the final drive. BUGLE CORPS was well rated but had little left at the end.
